Folks living in higher latitudes and using primitive outdoor toilet facilities might recognize the functional relationship between nutrition and minimizing body heat loss. For an example, take the patterned practice of eating lots of fermented cabbage during the cold season.

@DesignedEcosystems I’m afraid you’re going to have to spell that one out for me. I eat a lot of fermented foods and have lived with primitive toilet facilities and I’m not sure what you’re getting at.

@alexbayleaf Fermented veggies especially keep things moving.

@DesignedEcosystems oh as opposed to someone sitting for ages straining to take a dump? Fair enough! Not something I’m prone to, so I hadn’t thought of it.

@alexbayleaf

In locales in the higher latitudes during Cold seasons that don't enjoy direct fossil fuel subsidized provisions of fresh veggies... fermented vegetables are a really important source of vegetable nutrition.

@DesignedEcosystems yup that makes good sense! I’m in a cool temperate climate and while we do get frosts and a bit of snow, there’s always fresh greens and root veg to be had year round direct from the garden. I ferment for variety and flavour and handling gluts, but don’t need to do it to prevent scurvy 😉
