Decolonize Your Bookshelf🧡

As a little girl, I only ever saw people like me in books about Thanksgiving, written by white people.
This is how my bookstore, Paperbacks & Frybread came to be.
We launched online March of this year, vowing to help families of all kinds have easier access to THEIR stories and other & inclusive .
It has been the most joy curating our selection and hearing feedback from people who didn’t realize there were and with people just like them.

As people’s eyes are opened to lies of history (and current events) while deciding to make better decisions to support the humans that surround them: I hope I can play a small part in guiding people to better resources to serve this new found excursion.
I know the power of seeing yourself in a book, there’s nothing quite like it.
I also know the power of books to change people’s points of views.
I hope my suggestions bring more empathy and community.

@istarglow Tell me son of your favorite reads or genres and I’ll recommend some for ya!

@Paperbacks_n_Frybread I enjoy history and historical fiction but honestly I’m open, books are for sharing new stuff outside your comfort zone ✌️

@istarglow Awesome!!! I do a book review post every single evening!! (Actually about to draft today’s post!)

@Paperbacks_n_Frybread loving the new stories available now. If you like #scifi #navajo stories, maybe check out rebeccaroanhorse.com/.

@jjBlue @Paperbacks_n_Frybread this is not a genre I knew existed until now and I'm so happy to have found it!

@douglasvb @jjBlue I ADORE Rebecca Roanhorse! I did a post a few days ago about my review of her latest book, Tread of Angels! SOOO good. Highly recommend the audiobook.
Black Sun is also amazing. I haven’t read the second one yet but it’s on my list.

@Paperbacks_n_Frybread smoke.

My wife is a member of the Pokégon Potawatomi tribe. Her mother was 100% indigenous.

@Paperbacks_n_Frybread we read indian on the shelf, and thought we were being multi cultural. Sighs….

I was student/uber casual friend (?) to Vine, and he had his aunt Ella’s stories in Dakota. So i read those in grad school. She had a line by line translation, but no one ever published them when she was alive. I dont know if they have been published in dakota or lakota, yet.

Ive also got two sets of paperback navajo NaDine childrens tales 1 about coyote and 1 about fox.
