In addition to an unfavorable balance of forces, had a problem with the sequence of tasks:

The mine-clearing vehicles took too long (the cable of explosives proved too short to clear the vast fields) to clear the mines, blocking the column.
When ATGM and 'aviation struck, the vehicles fled the fire and jumped onto the minefield.
