Capitalism can't solve climate change because publicly traded companies must satisfy their shareholders — typically institutional investors — resulting in a focus on maximizing short-term gains at the expense of long-term planning for both the company and the environment.
This is the end of bp. They will be bankrupt within 10 or 20 years.
No public money will be able to save them.
The others are walking with full capacity into the other direction meanwhile.
Those, who went back even a single step, will have to catch up again. And this won't happen.
@davidho "Hey, Luigi, would you like a Murray mint?"
@davidho This is obviously true. As Andy Borowitz might say, "I read this in "Duh!" magazine.
@davidho
> BP has come under growing pressure from shareholders to retreat from the green pledges. BP has lost almost a quarter of its market value in the past two years while the market value of its rivals Shell and Exxon has increased while they pursue greater oil and gas production.
This sums it up nicely imo. If a problem is left for “free market” to solve, it just can’t. BP was actually the good guy, trying to go greener, but markets forced their hand. Even if all 3 big players pledged to go greener, I’m pretty sure we’d see a 4th big player emerge, not giving a damn about green energy. Or a reversal from all of them.
(Not defending BP here at all!)
Well, we're currently watching the death of capitalism either way. Unfortunately, though, it looks like it's going to be replaced by fascism, oligarchies, and dictatorships.
Then again, it follows a sort of logic for it to develop like this. People in capitalist countries were brainwashed for decades into believing hyper-individualism, fake promises of being able to get rich if only they work hard enough, and "free markets." Now reality is slowly dawning on everyone, as they watch how the riches are concentrating into the hands of fewer and fewer individuals (a natural process of capitalism) and how this inequality triggers many domestic issues, wars, and other crisis like the climate catastrophe.
The solution out of this mess would be more communal cooperation and the communization of essentials, but that appears to be difficult thanks to the previously mentioned conditioning.
@davidho Capitalism has it's flaws, certainly. So does every other form of government. What system then will "solve climate change"? Communism / Socialism? Anarchism? A flavor of total autocracy?
A system is only as determined to solve a problem as the individuals involved. The question really is do we have a critical mass of people willing to swim against the current to do what is right, or do we do what previous generations did and leave the problem on the next generation's doorstep?
#Communism can't be achieved yet, #Anarchism is impractical and unrealistic, and I don't think I need to convince anyone reading this that autocracy is a "no." #Socialism appears to be the best option for dealing with climate change. It prioritizes the interests of the working class (the majority of society) over the accumulation of profit. Such a system would be far more keen on dealing with #climatechange than #capitalism, which prioritizes profit over our well-being.

The irrational fear of social ownership of the physical resources and tools used to create goods and services is the root of humanity's social problems including abnormal human induced climate change caused by burning fossil fuels.
@davidho that dude has more than a passing resemblance to that United Healthcare wanker that got shot, that same chonky oligarch cockiness in his profile photo.
I actually feel like he's laughing at us from that photo.....the man lives dangerously....
it COULD if you'd remove all those externalized costs
like making the manufacturer pay if they want to sell stuff that's bad for climate
thing is: this isn't happening and never will
it's not ONLY capitalism and greed that's at fault - but things that could correct the problems are broken too
TL/DR: having capitalism detoriate until large corps can buy legislation didn't help
@davidho this toot is much more impactful than the öbb discussion
