The idea that the countries of the Global South will be capable of recycling materials that rich countries dump on them is unrealistic.
@davidho I have several categories of clothes depending on how presentable they are
- Acceptable for public
- home inside (some wear and tear)
- gardening (major wear and tear and uncleanable stains)
- rags
After they are unusable for category 4 I don't throw them in the recycling but in the general refuse bin. That way at least they will get burned for energy recovery instead of being shipped all over the world.
@davidho Very much so. Think even the idea that clothing can be recycled at all is doubtful. At least as it is produced now.
@davidho The best solution, of course, is to simply hold on to everything we don’t want and Australia has very large dry, empty spaces to do so
@davidho This is why I say that fast fashion should be illegal and roll my eyes at anyone who argues against it, knowing that the whole industry is based on horrible exploitation of the employees, animals and the environment. The fashion industry is already bad enough without companies like Inditex and Shein.
