Collected around 15 pounds of pawpaws for the seed dispersal project this fall. Really hope a lot of people take seeds bc there will be loads.

If you haven’t eaten one, the texture is smooth and custardy when ripe and it tastes like banana with a bit of vanilla.

@jblue We planted one a year ago and I really can't wait for it to grow up enough to make fruit. I've never tasted pawpaw before!

@DrTCombs do you have a self-fertile cultivar?

@jblue
I have just learned that we will be looking for a mate for our young pawpaw

@DrTCombs pawpaws graft very easily so if it’s better for you, you can find another tree to take a branch off of and attach to yours (if it has multiple branches by now). Tie a loose ribbon around it so you know which one is grafted and then take a flower from that branch and use it to pollinate the rest of the flowers on the tree.

@jblue
Oh, this is really helpful!
Ours hasn't bloomed yet and still only has one real stem, but we will be on the lookout for a donor as ours gets bigger. I'm also still up for getting a second. And third. Never had a pawpaw in my life but I am ready to go all in.

@jblue
We have a ton of space that we are gradually reclaiming from invasives, so there's room for a small army of pawpaws.

@DrTCombs Corylus americana is really nice too, it is also pest resistant. Some of the native nut trees such as butternut and birch are struggling with diseases.

Mature pawpaw trees produce colonies by sending up roots to form new trees so you might end up with a small army anyways.
