Tip: what to do with old/dead yeast

Slug death trap. This tip comes from a limacologist. Slugs are more attracted to bread dough than any other scent. They are also attracted to beer and will die in the alcohol. I use this in my sunroom to protect growing fruit and seedlings.

Sorry for non-glorious pic.

@jblue

Hmmm, can i sprinkle the yeast on the ground around my plants? Or must it be made into a dough?
Thank you!

@FiddleSix it needs to be made into a dough. The bread dough is just to attract them, it doesn’t actually kill them. The limacologist suggested putting the dough in a bowl and picking the slugs out of the dough in the morning everyday (and then “disposing them”). I make a beer moat so I don’t have to throw away the dough everyday, just add a bit of water to refresh the dough and fish out the slug corpses and add more beer.

@jblue

Thank you.
I was, of course, hoping for the easy way to use up the yeast (sprinkle it in the flower beds!), but I can make up a dough and moat it in beer, as you have done. Just won't put it in the back yard and where the dogs could get into it...

@FiddleSix yeah, this is for use in greenhouses and closed in spaces where slugs get really destructive. Not sure what left out beer and bread dough would do to wild animals.

@jblue Also Alfalfa Pellets (rabbit food) makes terrific time released Organic fertilizer.

@jblue heres one unsalted pasta water makes GREAT houseplant fertilizer.

@jblue Dying in alcohol is how I'd want to go …
