Elaeagnus multiflora
As soon as the goumi started putting out flower buds I put its pot next to the blueberries but the bees are mostly ignoring it.
Spent over an hour hand-pollinating it.
Elaeagnus multiflora, goumi
The flowers smell like peony and jasmine. The plant is nitrogen fixing and sets an abundance of fruit.
Fuzzy little punks!
Three days the flowers were blooming and no insects came even though they were swarming the blueberries.
I spent over an hour hand-pollinating this bush this morning and now 3 different species of bees are visiting the flowers.
WERE THEY WATCHING ME???
Habropoda laboriosa, blueberry digger bee
Osmia taurus, tuarus mason bee
Apis mellifera, western honey bee
@jblue They were afraid to go first.
@SunnJax I kinda wonder if this is true. I was checking it for pollinators since it started blooming.
It bloomed last year, but nothing touched the flowers and so I got no fruit. (It was in a different location.) I didn’t want to leave it up to the nature this year and waste a good harvest.
@jblue Maybe the pollen wasn't quite ripe?
