A fabulous tool for all Mastodonners who post pictures: Be My AI.

The software, available for Windows, Android and iPhone takes a picture or image and provides a very detailed description that you can copy into your Alt text (see examples below).

The interface is extremely simple and the program works for art, nature and graphs.

Adding a good Alt text has never been so easy.

@paulschoe I use Mastodon to interact with people, not with AI. If I detect people using AI in their posts, including AltText, I will unfollow, mute, or block.

AltText is a way that people of Mastodon voluntarily spend time on to enable people with low vision to benefit more from the platform.

If you want to block people who want to help people with low vision, then you are free to do so, but I doubt if that helps those people with low vision.

AI certainly has its drawbacks, particularly when it steals from creators, but AI also has many good uses. Be My Eyes is an example of good AI use.

@paulschoe People with low vision -- and many others who use AltText -- deserve better than AI content.

In my experience, the content created by Be My Eyes is far superior in describing pictures and graphs to what is usually added as AltText.

And by usually, I mean in over 95% of the cases that I have checked the AltText of pictures.

It is the same in several medical fields: AI is better in detecting skin cancer than doctors do.
Should I then refuse the AI analysis? Or can I accept that there are areas where the use of AI is beneficial?

@VisualStuart

@paulschoe You are confabulating two different uses of AI to credit one with the virtues of the other. Not interested in this misdirection. Later.
