Signal is blocked in several countries but you can set up a proxy server to help people access Signal no matter where they live. Here’s how:
https://signal.org/blog/proxy-please
Thank you for helping keep Signal available for everyone who needs it.
To share your proxies use #SignalProxy
@signalapp klingt nach einem schönen Samstagnachmittags Projekt #saturday
@signalapp
Does the Docker container need to run on ports 80 and 443, or can we use other external ports?
@signalapp could you share a non-docker version for already running native nginx+certbot setups?
@signalapp @1br0wn how do the signal proxies connect to the network? Also tls?
#SignalProxy #infosec
@hanscees @signalapp @1br0wn It's just an nginx server configured as a TLS proxy. TLS both ways.
@signalapp
Can people use signal through proxy even with a phone number from a country that blocks it?
@signalapp @aral I’ve only got a single IP address currently with several websites hosted behind an nginx reverse proxy. Is there a way to host the Signal proxy behind that using server name to select what traffic reaches it?
@JosephLord @signalapp I haven’t looked into it in detail but it looks like an nginx configuration so you might be able to merge it into yours. Ideally, though, I wouldn’t. It’s far less headache to spin up a separate $5 instance.
@signalapp Is Docker the only supported method of running a proxy?
@signalapp or maybe use something whose boss is not actively set against federation.
does anyone know how to get #SignalProxy working behind Cloudflare? @signalapp
@yawnbox @signalapp I tried yesterday and did not get it to work, neither tunnel nor Proxied. I just spun up a small box just for that purpose
@signalapp won't reply on Mastodon to help people that want to help run their infrastructure (Signal Proxy)
@signalapp wont open "issues" on github so we can have direct convos with devs of #SignalProxy
a failed attempt to bandaid a design problem of Signal
@yawnbox
@signalapp
It may be impossible as the proxy does not speak proper https (http over tls) but https over tls (http over tls over tls).
I would like to provide a proxy and setup one. But before sharing it I want to test, if it works
But my signal app won't allow me to enable the censorship circumvention because I'm already connected.
How can I test it?
I tried the signal.tube page with my server but it only says, that no connection could be established. Without any logs or more information, I'm unable to get it working.
I can't bind the nginx to the ports 80 and 443 because i already have a Traefik reverse proxy serving all my containers.
More information about the proxy would be great, not just a docker-compose file.
Why do I need port 80? Is it only for the ACME challenge?
@signalapp The Russian state has blocked Signal, but the so-called "safe" Telegram is free to operate
Folks, do you have an idling free tier compute instance? Humanity might have a need that you can fulfill with a little weekend project, if it's aligned with your values.
See the post by @signalapp above
@signalapp @ErikUden @leuchtturm habt ihr noch Platz?
@CarstenSchridde @signalapp @ErikUden Wurde das mal rechtlich eingeordnet, was einem da als Betreiber erwarten könnte?
@leuchtturm @signalapp @ErikUden Uhr, gute Frage, ich höre mich Mal um.
@signalapp
Eine Anleitung in deutscher Sprache würde meine Motivation deutlich erhöhen
@signalapp Sometimes things do work out, just like this #SignalProxy over here sgnl://signal.tube/#gottteam.social
Yay!
@signalapp doesn't the standard censorship circumvention method work, those in the advanced privacy settings?
@signalapp Could you please add your documentation for the (very much likely) scenario that people have a running reverse proxy, please? And also open the issues on Github!
I feel like there are a lot of people that would like to support Signal by running a proxy, but struggle to get it running because of your very specific documentation.
Suggestion: implement something like Snowflake proxy in signal.
Or implement a button to connect to Tor via a Tor Bridge like and then to connect to signal servers.
@signalapp@mastodon.world
I wonder if they are blocking XMPP servers?
Signal?
That's like a centralized APP you need your cell phone number to register to isn't it?
Can't think of a better way to help government agencies to get data about unwanted citizens ..
@signalapp highly appreciate your support in these tough times
