@hellomiakoda This!

As a fellow #actuallyautistic human with #auditoryprocessing difficulties, I use closed #captions full time. The auto-generating ones on #youtube and other #tech like #msteams #googlemeet and #zoom range from OK to atrocious, and at the drop of a hat. If someone has an accent or is speaking quickly? Forget it. The level of purely unnecessary difficulty just increased exponentially.

Time for a new #Introduction . I’m a Lecturer in #Neuroscience in #London at the #UniversityOfRoehampton . I study #NoiseExposure & #HearingLoss & how it affects #AuditoryProcessing , #Audiology , & #Hearing ; particularly #SpeechInNoise & #PredictiveCoding . I focus on #HiddenHearingLoss noise exposure & I’m really interested in the intersection between noise exposure & #Neurodivergent conditions like #Autism & #Schizophrenia .

My home is a #Boat & most of my pictures here involve my #Cat .

Gaah, documentaries. Do NOT slap music on to make things seem supposedly more emotional when your narrators are still relaying information.

Latest example now being the 1942-1944 years about the Third Reich slaves. I'd heard everything fine, and then all of a sudden with music blurring the sound, I couldn't understand a thing because of not hearing the words until trying to turn the volume up. Which helps only marginally with some things.

I guess I should probably do an #Introduction as well. I’m a #Neuroscience #Postdoc in #Spain studying #NoiseExposure & #HearingLoss & how it affects #AuditoryProcessing, #Audiology, & #Hearing; particularly #SpeechInNoise & #PredictiveCoding. I focus on #HiddenHearingLoss noise exposure & I’m really interested in the intersection between noise exposure & #Neurodivergent conditions like #Autism & #Schizophrenia.

My permanent home is a #Boat & most of my pictures here involve my #Cat.

I just realized why I hate #remoteworking when everyone around me seems to love it: it fucks with my #AuDHD #masking.

I didn't realize until I was forced to WFH in 2020 just how much I rely on #bodydoubling to function: everything from assessing how hard I'm supposed to be working based on the people around me, to remembering to each lunch. I'm much better at conversation IRL - being on the phone constantly with people whose lips I can't see messes with my #auditoryprocessing, which makes me more socially anxious, which makes it harder to focus and retain information. It threw off the daily routine I was precariously managing. I can't just copy the emotional reactions of everyone around me = I don't know what the "appropriate" emotional reactions are for situations = I just default to constant anxiety.

I feel bad because so many #neurodivergent folks really prefer #WFH but I selfishly want y'all to come back to the office so I can unfuck my life 😩 Am I alone here, @actuallyautistic ?

@Zed_Czar @halo This recent @Vox video describes a few additional reasons. If you aren’t listening under the ideal conditions for which the sound is mixed, you’ll miss a lot, and there’s not much you can do to work around it.

Today I learned that my #hearing / #AuditoryProcessing isn't getting worse - it's that #TV shows and films are now increasingly likely to mix their #audio for #SurroundSound, where the dialogue track is intended to come out of the speaker close behind you, so they tend to put it really quiet in the mix. Hence why I need to put subtitles on to follow dialogue on shows, but I never used to. Which is... bonkers, because who tf uses surround sound? Aren't we all streaming on our laptops?

Wahoo!

I have #auditoryProcessing issues, my phone on mute because I Can't Even...

And can't access my own voicemail without being reduced to tears.

BUT.... because I was fucking around on mastodon I had my phone in my hand when a cancellation for a neuro consult called!

Thanks #mastodon!

Receptionist was super nice about following with an email so I could communicate that way.

It is worth asking for your weird lil #accessability needs, people are surprisingly kind.
