Beneath a cloudless sky of pale blue, we are standing near the shore of a lake. A low wooded ridge rises above the far shore. The sun is setting behind it, casting a golden glow along the horizon. On the near shore, a small rocky hill rises to our right. A tree grows right at the top. There are some leafy shrubs and grass growing along the flanks, but mostly a low ground cover plant with tiny leaves that when seen from a distance resembles grass. This ground cover runs tight up to the rocky near shore of the lake and is covered with tiny white flowers. In the foreground, a leafy plant whose leaves are beginning to turn golden brown is throwing out several spherical clusters of tiny flowers at the tip of each branch.

A narrow two-lane road with forest on both sides. About half of the leaves are missing from most of the trees; those that remain are orange, gold or yellow. In the foreground on the right side of the road is a single small tree which still has most of its leaves, which are all a striking deep red in color.

Standing on the rocky shore of a large lake, a small shrub with long, narrow green leaves to our left. Beyond a strip if rocks and grass, the far shore is wooded. Some of the trees are beginning to turn gold or orange. Streaky clouds, many tinted gold by the setting sun, are beginning to fill the sky from the right. The sky and far shore are perfectly mirrored on the dead calm lake surface.

A river fills most of the screen. There is almost no current here; the surface looks more like a lake. Its lightly rippled surface mirrors the clear blue sky and the trees lining both banks. Their foliage is a blaze of golds and oranges. Many of the trees along the banks lean out over the river where there is less competition for sunshine. A few tilt quite sharply in that direction.

We are standing in a hardwood forest carpeted with ferns. The leaves are wearing the golds, oranges and bright yellow greens of autumn. The ferns have faded to light greens and golden browns. The afternoon sun is shining from directly ahead, backlighting the leaves and the ferns, enriching the color display.
