This was so nice Kelsey Bishop sent me some Candor swag and I was able to tell students in yet another founder story from a former student. Inspiring to all but I’m sure extra so for women who all too often don’t hear enough female-founder tech stories. And for folks managing remote teams, be sure to check out joincandor.com

Congrats to former student Branick Weix whose business Aryeo has been acquired by Zillow. Branick reached out to me before starting Boston College as a freshman & it was clear he was a star. Branick took 3 of my classes & was one of the first TAs for our course. Extra bonus, one of his first investors was also one of my former students. We’ve built a flywheel of excellence in Chestnut Hill. Way to inspire. So proud of you. Soar 🦅 zillowgroup.com/news/real-esta

Professor challenges students that the final exam will be cancelled if they create a viral TikTok that garners 1 million views. It took one student just 24 hrs. Sorry and , no such bonus for our class re: course YouTube channel subscriptions. You don’t need gimmicks when you have skills. Bring on Finals Week! wbur.org/hereandnow/2023/04/20

Oh! Just got an email from someone at Apple congratulating me on being named an Apple Distinguished Educator. First I’d heard, but this is great news! Looking forward to sharing more of the Semester of @SwiftUI with other educators in the program. Thanks to all who have helped & encouraged me & my students. I’ve learned so much from our online community and owe all a big and continued thank you!

The @SwiftUI hackers with mid-term #2 underway. They are building the Star Wars Species app. API call, JSON parsing, paged JSON while scrolling, load all pages with recursive load call, AsyncImage with placeholder, ProgressView, and a “Surprise and Delight” talking magic-8-ball-style Yoda when you click Grogu. Employers looking for Jr Devs - here’s a room with 50 smarties. I’ll post a solution video tomorrow for anyone playing along with the home game . . Keep hacking!

Today is the second mid-term for , the Semester of @SwiftUI students. Wish them luck! I’ll be posting the mid-term and solution video by tomorrow if any learners want to try on their own. AND if you are in & want to encourage fledgling iOS devs, my & students have a showcase at Boston College ArtsFest Sat. April 29 1-3pm 245 Beacon (new Engineering Bldg) Room 301. Flo Rida is performing on campus on Monday. We have a exam on Tuesday. I’ve warned my students to study early. Flo doesn’t want their grades to be “Low”. It hit 88 degrees F in Boston today so there are lots of distractions attempting to foil their Swifty prep. Study well, Scholars.

Slides for Week 11 of the Semester of @SwiftUI are up in the course google drive at gallaugher.com. We built a basic “Houses of Westeros” app using apioficeandfire & I covered API calls, JSON parsing, paged JSON loading while scrolling, ProgressView, and more. Second mid-term is in a week. Some samples from the Keynote sides w/challenges & solutions.

students, remember that although we didn’t have day classes today, classes after 4pm will be held. Today we’ll be building the “Houses of Westeros” app using an API call, JSON parsing, we’ll cover loading paged JSON while scrolling, and recursive calls to load all pages, plus we’ll add a progress view. Prepare to get Swifty! For those following Semester of , slides w/notes & challenges plus solutions will be posted by later this evening, Boston-time.

Wu-Tang Name Generator in Swift. A question from the first mid-term that students following Semester of & should be able to complete after Ch. 1. Demo basic knowledge of Arrays, Structs, Arrays of Structs, Loops (for in, while), functional programming (.forEach, contains(where:) and other techniques. Of course, inspired by STEM advocate GZA, and Childish Gambino/aka Donald Glover/aka Lando. youtu.be/nDeHQL6liSI This is not your typical college coding course @Swift

It’s first @swift and @swiftui mid-term day, today. Had to break into some of the Infinite Loop gear for student inspiration. Wish them luck! May you go on to join our alums in Cupertino if you are so inclined! Soar! 🦅

Come visit, even if virtually. We’re the cradle of liberty, a center of Higher Ed and Tech. We even have a national park of harbor islands with war ruins, camping spots, and yurts!
