Alyssa<p>Currently reading: Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. I read this book for school about 20 years ago, so it’s past time for a reread. <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/nowreading" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>nowreading</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/bookstodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bookstodon</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/bannedbooks" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bannedbooks</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ThingsFallApart" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ThingsFallApart</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ChinuaAchebe" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ChinuaAchebe</span></a></p>

Megan<p>Chinua Achebe:</p><p>"Then I grew older and began to read about adventures in which I didn’t know that I was supposed to be on the side of those savages who were encountered by the good white man. I instinctively took sides with the white people. They were fine! They were excellent. They were intelligent. The others were not . . . they were stupid and ugly. Ian Hunt<p>Reading a bit of 1980s. Both these books are superbly, sometimes astonishingly well written, politically sharp and with deep resources of humour and perceptiveness. Achebe's last novel (1987) feels like a quite different type of achievement than his earlier work. Kelman's first novel (1984) just couldn't be better. Poets are the unacknowledged thingwaybobs, some novelists too. <a href="https://mastodon.green/tags/JamesKelman" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>JamesKelman</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.green/tags/ScottishLiterature" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ScottishLiterature</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.green/tags/ChinuaAchebe" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ChinuaAchebe</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.green/tags/AfricanLiterature" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AfricanLiterature</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.green/tags/books" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>books</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.green/tags/vendredilecture" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vendredilecture</span></a></p>
