Juist daarom inspireerde hij Amerika</p><p> Lang voor de tot bloedens toe uitgemolken cinematic universes van Marvel en DC, de Spider-Man-films van Sam Raimi en de Batman-reeks van Tim Burton, was er de verfilming van Superman. De visuele effecten waren in 1978 even pover als in de eerste Star Trek-film een jaar later, maar het project van regisseur Richard Donner bracht 300 miljoen dollar in het laatje.<br>Het contrast tussen de vliegende man in het blauw-rode latex kostuum in de bioscoop en de maatschappelijke temperatuur in de Verenigde Staten kon haast niet groter zijn. De onlangs overleden president Jimmy Carter sprak rond die tijd over een nationale ‘crisis van zelfvertrouwen’. Amerika, zo bleek, snakte naar een schier onaantastbare actieheld. En die vond het land in acteur Christopher Reeve (1952-2004).<br>Met aanstekelijk pathos blikt de documentaire Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story terug op de tijd dat Superman nog als ultiem Amerikaans symbool te boek stond. Zelfs ideale schoonzoon Henry Cavill kon de Man van Staal ruim tien jaar geleden niet meer redden van zijn gedateerde imago (overdaad aan masculiniteit, schreeuwend tekort aan zwakke punten).<br>De schok was gigantisch toen Reeve in 1995 tot aan zijn schouders verlamd raakte na een lelijke val van zijn paard. De verpersoonlijking van onkwetsbaarheid bleek tot ongeloof van velen opvallend kwetsbaar. De man die op het witte doek kon vliegen, was in levenden lijve niet langer in staat om zelfstandig te ademen. Zijn kryptoniet bleek een normaliter ongevaarlijke vrijetijdsbesteding.<br>Op basis van familievideo’s, filmscènes en interviews met acteurs als Glenn Close, Whoopi Goldberg en Jeff Daniels reconstrueren regisseurs Ian Bonhôte en Peter Ettedgui Reeves leven voor- en nadat hij een dwarslaesie opliep. We zien hoe Reeve veranderde van iemand met bindingsangst in een toegewijde vader (‘Hoewel ik zit, ben ik op mijn pootjes terechtgekomen’). Hoe hij eerst de stekker uit zijn leven wilde trekken, maar hoe toen het geloof postvatte dat hij ooit weer zou kunnen lopen (‘Er bestaat geen valse hoop, alleen hoop’). Hoe hij altijd kon rekenen op de eindeloze liefde en toewijding van zijn vrouw Dana en zijn beste vriend Robin Williams.<br>Reeves aanwezigheid bij de Oscaruitreiking in 1996 en zijn latere werk als regisseur en acteur plaveide de weg voor de acceptatie van collega’s met een lichamelijke beperking, zoals RJ Mitte (cerebrale parese), Michael J. Fox (parkinson) en Adam Pearson (neurofibromatose). Maar ook buiten de filmstudio’s kan het doorzettingsvermogen van Reeve een inspiratie zijn voor alleen al de naar schatting 15.000 Nederlanders met een dwarslaesie. Carnivius<p>McFarlane Page Punchers Superman '78</p><p>Weird figure. It's the new Reeve figure in 'comic shading' and comes with an issue of the recent comic book set in Reeve's movie universe. Overall it's good but some odd choices and it has that 'brittle' feel to the plastic McFarlane often does. The pins are still quite ugly but fine.
