WordStar 4.0, #DOS software George R.R. Martin has used for all of his writing, running flawlessly on #FreeDOS 1.4 in a Virtualbox VM.

While I usually don't promote #proprietary software (especially one with a proprietary file format like WordStar), with the help of a page on Technically We Write ( https://technicallywewrite.com/2024/06/26/wordstarfiles ) I have some ideas for ways to make WS4 files forwards-compatible with #libre software. But I'm just a hobby dev so the chances of finishing anything is low. We'll see.

This is a screenshot of the proprietary software WordStar 4.0 running full-screen in a FreeDOS 1.4 virtual machine (Virtualbox). The screen is entirely monochrome, with a black background and white/grey text and status bars. The main chunk of the top half of the screen is a list of keyboard shortcuts one can use in the software (such as ^K, or Ctrl-K, used to open the save screen to save and close the document). The lower middle 1/3 of the screen is text transcribed from Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad to see how it shows in the software.

WordStar 4.0 is a What You See Is What You Get (or "WYSIWYG") text editor, so there is automatic space additions in order to justify the text to the margins. The top of the screen has measurement marks, which can be used to determine where on a printed page text will appear relative to the margins.

The very top ~1/20 of the screen gives the current file being edited (titled "TEST4.WS4"), and shows that text is in insert and align mode. The very bottom 1/10 of the screen is numbered options 1-10 with text next to them, which relate to the function keys on the keyboard. Each function key activates one of these labelled features.

Like, this took me a second because it honestly looks like it would work on a 286 in EGA. I'd just want to add an OPL or at least Tandy 3 voice soundtrack.

Somewhat intended bonus of writing your website in pure html: it looks great in #DOS!

Here's my website accessed with the software #lynx on a basic #FreeDOS install. It looks basically 1-1 with how it looks in a web browser (except it isn't purple :).

The picture shows a GNU/Linux desktop (using the sway window manager) which is customized to have the bar on the bottom in the gray default color of Windows 95. The bar shows the current day and time and connected networks, with the WiFi network name erased for privacy.

In the desktop on workspace 5 (out of 10) is a fullscreen window of Virtualbox with a running FreeDOS virtual machine. The FreeDOS virtual machine is a small centered rectangle taking up approximately 1/4 of the area of the screen. In FreeDOS I am running the program lynx, accessing the homepage of my website https://persrex.xyz/. The FreeDOS virtual machine is mostly a black rectangle with white, monospace text, where certain text is highlighted in different colors to distinguish links and what would normally be <code> blocks or italics/bold from plain text. There are navigation instructions within the lynx software instructing the user that they can navigate the site using the arrow keys and quit by pressing "q".

Cuando era pibe y en casa teníamos una flamante 286, recuerdo haber jugado a un juego en "3D", que consistía en una estructura con habitaciones y pasillos, en donde había interruptores que abrían puertas, ítems para agarrar, y pirámides que disparaban rayos.

Todavía no logré encontrar exactamente ese juego, pero recorriendo el catálogo de eXoDOS, encontré Castle Master, que se le asemeja bastante.

Es menos abstracto que el que jugaba yo. En Castle Master tenés que entrar en un castillo, explorar las habitaciones, encontrar llaves y otros items, desbloquear puertas, matar monstruos a piedrazos, encontrar pistas, y tratar de interpretar lo que intentaron hacer los desarrolladores arriesgándose un poco a probar cosas y a pensar un poco "out of the box".

Además, eXoDOS trae el manual del juego, que es una hermosura.

Pelígonos bien pixelados, un montón de controles desparramados por todo el teclado para máxima incomodidad, y efectos de sonido por PC speaker en toda su gloria. ¿Qué más podés pedir?
