Despite ongoing peace talks, fighting continues in parts of DR Congo between local forces and Rwanda-backed M23 rebels. The M23 has taken control of much of the eastern part of DR Congo since January – its first major advance being the capture of Goma in North Kivu province. Award-winning photojournalist Hugh Kinsella Cunningham has been documenting these takeovers as well as their impact on civilians. Speaking on FRANCE 24's Perspective programme, he described how civilians were ordered by the rebels to leave displacement camps and return to their villages, which had been ravaged by fighting.#Africa #Perspective #DRCongo #Rwanda #M23rebels #photography

Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo have committed to drafting a peace agreement by May 2. But trust remains fragile. Militia groups who have been operating in the region are at the roots of some of that strain. Kigali continues to view the FDLR, the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda, founded by Hutu extremists in the early 2000s, as a direct threat to its national security. While Kinshasa had once committed to dismantling the group, it now accuses Rwanda of using it as a pretext to justify backing the M23 rebels whose offensive in eastern DRC has already claimed thousands of lives since January. Rwanda wants to show it can manage this FDLR issue by reintegrating ex-fighters into society. FRANCE 24’s correspondent in Rwanda, Juliette Montilly, was given rare access to one of the country’s "Demobilisation and Reintegration Centres", where she was able to speak with former militiamen.#Africa #DRCongo #M23rebels #war #Rwanda #PaulKagame

Thousands of children have been subjected to rape and sexual violence in conflict-battered eastern Congo over the course of two months, the UN children's agency said Friday, warning that existing funding gaps meant that hundreds of thousands were deprived of protection. Children make up between 35% to 45% of the nearly 10,000 cases of rape and sexual violence reported January and February this year, James Elder, the spokesperson for UNICEF told reporters in Geneva on Friday.#Africa #DRCongo #rape #children #war #childabuse

It was supposed to be a defining moment, but peace talks between the Congolese government and M23 rebels scheduled for this Wednesday in Doha have been postponed. It would have been the first direct talks since M23 fighters seized eastern DR Congo's two largest cities, Goma and Bukavu. The swift offensive has left thousands dead, driven hundreds of thousands more from their homes and raised fears of a wider regional conflict. We speak to Beverly Ochieng, Senior Analyst at Control Risks.#Africa #EyeonAfrica #DRCongo #M23rebels
