How Youtuber Louis Rossmann's beef with an Australian PlayStation repair whiz revealed a shocking past
abc.net.au/news/2025-07-20/you

This story takes some twists and turns.

For me, it's a reminder for me of several important points:
- People who do downright awful things in one area of their life/work/morals are usually terrible people in other areas.
- Some people have enough awareness to say "Sorry" to their victims, yet not show remorse or contrition. They do not change their ways, they are manipulative, and they think they're the smartest person in the room. They're incapable of showing sincere respect or gratitude toward other people. They're toxic, they're abusive, they're bullies, and they're acting as though "The end justifies the means" to get what they want.
- We should all have the right to repair software, hardware, and systems we own. Whether you're running a repair business, or are a Maker (or "Hacker" by the old-school definition), or are a regular person engaging in a hobby at home, we should be supportive of each other in these aims. It's wrong to impede these goals by abusing legal tools such as Copyright, DRM, and DMCA.

📈 Piracy is rising fast—and it's not just nostalgia.

🔹 15+ billion piracy site visits in 2023
🔹 Software piracy remains ~37%
🔹 Music piracy jumped 13% in a year
🔹 Streaming piracy up 36% since 2020

Why the increase?

Subscription fatigue

Rising costs across SaaS and entertainment

Fragmented content (too many platforms)

DRM is punishing legit users

Loss of ownership in digital goods

People aren’t just stealing—they’re pushing back.

When paid options are worse than pirated ones, the system is broken. Time to rethink value, access, and trust.

Sure, they unbricked a train 😮 but the truly surprising part of this story is that Google returned a useful result 😂

> “This is quite a peculiar part of the story—when SPS was unable to start the trains and almost gave up on their servicing, someone from the workshop typed "polscy hakerzy" (‘Polish hackers’) into Google,” the team from Dragon Sector, made up of Jakub Stępniewicz, Sergiusz Bazański, and Michał Kowalczyk, told me in an email. “Dragon Sector popped up and soon after we received an email asking for help.”

I'm noticing a rise in software, media, and game piracy again. Why?

Because people are fed up.

SaaS fatigue. Subscription overload. Constant price hikes with minimal improvements. Products we never truly "own." DRM that breaks more than it protects.

It’s no longer just about "getting it free"—for many, it’s a protest. When Photoshop is $30/month and requires internet to launch, and movies are split across 6+ overpriced services, people will rebel.

We’ve modernized the tools, but repeated the mistake:
Make access too expensive or too frustrating, and piracy becomes a more ethical experience.

People don’t want to be free. They want fairness.

sometimes you forget that #DRM is still a thing in the era of monthly money grabbing.

i have a tonne of programming epubs i've bought over the years and none of them have ever been locked down.

i got bought some today and embarrassingly discovered that i'm not allowed to use them as i please.

i should've done the moral thing and stolen them.

OK, I need the e-reader community's help once again! 🙏

So, I just purchased (small sum, just because I wanted to try) a title from the official Kobo store. But I don't have a Kobo reader!

I have, in fact, a jailbroken 2018 Kindle PaperWhite with KOreader on it.

The question is: how do I access my newly purchased ttile? Downloading it via browser from the store window provides me with a .acsm file I'm not sure what to do with.

Never dealt with Kobo before, so I'm pretty at a loss. I'm thankful for any pointers to useful resources, or just tell me I'm screwed if that's the case. 😆

Potentially relevant info: my desktop computer runs on Linux Mint exclusively and yep, I have Caliber for all the de-DRM and conversion stuff.

My ancient 2013-era #Kindle Paperwhite keeps on deleting sideloaded ebooks, which means that I should probably shop for a new reading tablet.

So, what small-sized #Android #eink tablet can people recommend which also runs the Kindle app without any problems?

(These days, I try to avoid the Kindle store as much as I can, but I am loath to give up my vast library of Kindle ebooks entirely. Although I fortunately still have copies of most the files back when it was still possible to crack the #DRM .)

For Linux users who want to remove DRMs from ebooks they've legally purchased, so as to read them on the ebook reader they've also legally purchased for their intended purpose: I've updated my setup to replace using #AdobeDigitalEditions through wine with the simple and marvelous libgourou library.

With thanks to @mart1oeil who told me years ago this should be possible 🙂

Feu servir llibres digitals d'EbiblioCat? Desinstal·lar i instal·lar no funciona, hehehe, ja ho he provat!

That's twice in two days I've gone to buy an ebook but then noticed it was only available with #DRM and noped out. I guess authors don't have that much leverage (look at academics!), but consider asking your publisher to sell DRM free ebooks. Otherwise I might find a way to support the author, but the publisher isn't getting a cut.
