Important Message from, Chief Clifford Poucett
"Goodstoney First Nation
Many of you may have read in The Globe and Mail last night about a letter I wrote to Alberta Premier Danielle Smith. #cdnpoli #ableg
Premier Smith says her push to change Alberta’s referendum laws is about democracy. Let’s be honest: it’s about separation. And that has serious consequences for Indigenous Nations.
My message to the Premier is clear: Our Nations are not stakeholders — we are Treaty partners and rights holders, recognized in law and protected under Section 35 of the Constitution.
Our Treaties — including Treaty 7 — are not symbolic. They are binding, nation-to-nation agreements grounded in mutual recognition and shared stewardship, not subordination.
The Supreme Court has been clear: Aboriginal title is a legal interest in land. Governments have a duty to consult and accommodate where our rights are at stake.
We are also businesspeople. Our communities rely on legal certainty to attract investment, build Indigenous-led enterprises, and create opportunity for the next generation
Legislation that bypasses Treaty consultation doesn’t just violate the honour of the Crown — it creates instability that harms First Nations and puts Alberta’s economic future on shaky ground.
If Alberta is serious about growth and reconciliation, it must start by honouring its Treaty obligations and working with us — not around us.
—Chief Clifford Poucett"
