Last week, I shaped the tips of most of the columns using a chainsaw.
Today, I continued charring the #larchwood columns (with most of the sapwood removed) using a propane burner. This is a variation of the traditional Shou Sugi Ban technique (Japanese: 焼杉), in which the wood surface is carbonized to improve durability, weather resistance, and protection against fungal decay.

I opted for a propane gas burner instead of an open flame, as it allows for more even and controlled charring. The temperature ranged between approximately 1200°C and 1800°C. Each column took about 10–15 minutes. I kept the flame constantly moving to avoid scorching any single spot and to achieve a consistent, shallow burn across the surface.

I'm pretty satisfied with the results.
From my experience, the durability is best when the surface of the heartwood is smooth and evenly charred. I'm convinced that charring larch wood without the sapwood results in greater resistance compared to burning the entire wood (with intact sapwood).

Thought you might like to see how the quilted wall hanging is coming along. I'm tentatively calling it Tree of Worlds. It's about 4 feet square without the edging or hanging tabs.

All the appliques have been adhesed onto the panels, and all but the tree panel have also had the appliques tacked in with edge stitching to reinforce. I will get to that panel eventually...

Previously, I had cut the panel into four parts and put a "flying geese" runner between the panel pieces, with a diamond in the center. Now I have cut out appliques in the shapes of the sun, moon, stats and planets for the top two panels. On the bottom right is the earth with three cities (cut from fabric showing buildings), and in the bottom left is a tree that is growing suns, moons, planets, and constellations cut out from the space-themed fabric shown last time. The colors are pastels: blue, purples, green, pinks, yellows, orange. You might recognize the tree cutout from the Moonflowers small wall hanging...

Preparing fence posts for a new 95-metre stretch of fencing. I'm working with larch—tough, durable stuff that’ll last for decades once the splint wood is removed. Each post is shaped by hand with care, aiming for precision and consistency. It’s slow, physical work, but there's real satisfaction in seeing the pile grow. These posts will form the backbone of the fence—solid, straight, and made to endure.
