I don't know why so many people seem to think that using a lot of hashtags is some kind of negative personality indicator.

Posts with a lot of hashtags supposedly look "attention-seeking" or "commercial". Some decry hashtag-users as remnants of old toxic social media habits and 'SEO' (search engine optimisation).

Without content recommendation algorithms, we've got to handle the discoverability by ourselves!

More hashtags on posts mean a more solid search and filter system! We all should use more hashtags.

#fedi #fediverse #fediMeta

see? those were three already, and they're all ones that people plausibly search for.

screw you here's more:

Alten Account nochmal reaktiviert, um mir die gefolgten #Hashtags anzugucken, um ihnen hier auch wieder zu folgen – waren zum Glück nur 12, also manuell machbar – und dann wieder auf diesen hier umgeleitet.

@YurkshireLad

It's not the number of #Hashtags per se, it's their clear relevance to the post (text or image) at hand

(I'll name names...)

#Pixelfed seems to have a cultural bias toward long lists of hashtags, many of which have no direct or even indirect relevance to the specific image in the post -- sometime using 15 or 20 or more hashtags

It's just simple #HashtagSpam

At least PIxelfed has gotten away from the original format of one hashtag per line -- now they're all in a block

Still too many are simply irrelevant to the photo subject, the camera used, or the post-processing technique -- they're just noise

Would these work with #hashtags ?

Information, Communication & Society: Hashtags, Hatetags and social media campaigns in Ethiopia’s Tigray conflict . “This article examines the role of social media, specifically Twitter, in the amplification of violent divisive discourse during Ethiopia’s Tigray conflict (2020–2022), introducing the concept of Hatetags to analyze the transforming of hashtags into vehicles of digital conflict.”

VerbaMea: About Tag Push . This is for Mastodon. “The concept is simple…. Follow any of the tag accounts, which corresponds to a hashtag, and you will get copies of posts as they appear around the fediverse, straight to your own timeline. We’re still testing, and growing. Look at the list below for the tags we are sniffing out and pushing onwards.”

Hey kids — a tip from An Old:

I don’t read most emojis. Brain skips right over them. Same thing for most #hashtags if the interface renders them in a different color.

If you wish to communicate with us Olds you need to use words or possibly emoticons. (Look it up…)

I need to use more hashtags in general because searching for prior posts is much easier when you do so. They add a lot more work to posts however. I might want to just run each post through a LLM to just automatically produce the hashtags instead of having to think about them. #NeedHashtags #Hashtags #Utility #Efficiency #LeisureMaxxing

On hashtags.

They make the Fedi what it is. They are respectful and anarchic.

A post on US politics? My friends who can't process this any more: they can filter it out if I flag it with a hashtag.

I write about an obscure poet? Those who are curious but unaware : they will find my post if I flag it right.

A long-standing line of posts on my dog? I give it a unique hashtag and others can follow up, if they so wish.

Most importantly: we don't sell. We don't maximise finds. Let the world find your post when the world is ready for it. Never make an exhaustive list of hashtags that cover all aspects. 2-4, maximum 6.

Your post with its hashtags is a letter in a bottle, floating in the ocean.

It need not be found. Randomness is good.

Make your hashtags partial. Make them obscure.

The Lady Joan Mastodon once told me: Roamer, use hashtags, they are what will make us win. But use them wisely. Confuse the Great Algo. Trust in chance.

@caesar Yeah, I was very excited by that too, but it doesn't support following #hashtags. Sad, because hashtags are one of the best parts of Mastodon for me, but a lot of tools and people just don't get it. And some actively even hate them (?!). I don't understand it.

I follow far more hashtags than people. Normal people post about lots of stuff I'm not interested in. Hashtags let me see stuff I am interested in, without having to go find the people and follow them first.
