interesting progress: "STOUT V2.0: SMILES to IUPAC name conversion using transformer models" doi.org/10.1186/s13321-024-009

"The model was trained on a dataset of nearly 1 billion SMILES and corresponding IUPAC names, generated using OpenEye's Lexichem software. This new version achieves very high accuracy on test and benchmark datasets, demonstrating improved capability in producing longer IUPAC names with fewer errors overall."

Overview of the upcoming white paper from #IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) on current and potential future applications of #blockchain across the scientific research cycle.
Some nonprofit use cases from the academic sector: the Bloxberg Consortium (out of the Max Planck Digital Library) and the #OpenScience Chain consortium (funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation).

De Gruyter · Blockchain Technology and its Use Along the Scientific Research WorkflowAt the Council meeting held during the 2019 World Chemistry Congress in Paris, a representative from one of IUPAC’s National Adhering Organizations raised the question “What is Blockchain Technology?” They went on to say that both “Blockchain” and “Artificial Intelligence” were prominent buzzwords and asked if IUPAC could provide information on how these technologies were impacting science in general and chemistry in particular. Coincidentally, at that same Congress, the technology had been the subject of a presentation by Richard Shute [1], one of the authors of this paper, and the technology had already captured the interest of Bonnie Lawlor, another of the authors of this paper, to the extent that she published an article in Chemistry International (CI) on the topic the following year [2]. As a result of the question raised at the Council meeting, Javier García-Martínez, IUPAC President 2022-2023, suggested that a white paper on Blockchain be developed (Note: Artificial Intelligence was made the focus of the global, virtual 2021 World Chemistry Leadership Meeting (WCLM) and a brief article on that special event was published in the July 2022 issue of CI [3]).

My school has imposed a clause that says they are happy to pay for PD opportunities but the cost is only covered if you stay on for 6 terms. If you leave the job within that time you have to pay it back. I can understand that, but our school has 5 teaching blocks a year called 1a, 1b, 1c, 1d, 1e. So far no one has confirmed what a term is... I just got the #IUPAC conference #ICCE in Pattaya, Thailand OK'd and plan on staying in my job for 2 years, but it could impact future PD decisions. #Teaching #ChemistryTeacher #IBChemistry @edutooter
