Update: Police arrested the MFer who tried to burn down the PA governor’s residence with #JoshShapiro and his family asleep inside.

My previous #Philadelphia #Inquirer gift link has the update, incl this passage:

“On Saturday evening, the first night of #Passover, Shapiro posted a photo of his family’s Seder dinner at the governor’s residence.

“The fire was set in the same room where the dinner was held.”

Josh Shapiro and his family were uninjured, but the fire caused a "significant amount of damage" to parts of the governor's mansion, according to state police.

While (most) corporate media outlets are ignoring or downplaying the #HandsOff rallies, indie and nonprofits are not! For example, the #Philadelphia #Inquirer covered #HandsOffPhilly and other Delaware Valley protests. Support your #localnews that is likewise covering these events. A new #WillBunch piece in the #Inquirer puts into eloquent prose why those numbers cited in #CoryBooker’s press release matter and how it will motivate voters and electeds alike. Must-read via this gift link courtesy of my Inky sub. #Democracy #GoodTrouble #USpol

Here are #localnews indie/nonprofit media coverage of Booker’s filibuster that I sub to!

First up, 1 of 2 articles in my hometown #Philadelphia #Inquirer. (Gift link!) An op-ed by the Inky Editorial Board:

Apparently the Philadelphia Inquirer is laying off journalists who were working on DEI?

The article also mentions layoffs due to a return to office mandate, which I would consider ableist, among other issues.

Does anyone know more, or know who to look to for commentary? I'm not sure Axios is the best source.

One obvious alternative is the union blog:

@mastodonmigration 💯 It is totally possible to put together a indie / nonprofit media list from which to get your news! Like @ProPublica, @democracydocket, @guardian, and any number of newsletters or pods like Daily Beans (Mueller She Wrote). My hometown #Philadelphia #Inquirer is owned by the nonprofit Lenfest Center for Journalism: inquirer.com

Anyone from #Philadelphia or South #NewJersey probably has heard about the #Sixers jonesing for a new stadium right in downtown #Philly, which would destroy much of Chinatown. So they lobbied for TWO YEARS, got approval from City Council and the mayor … and just now — in a stunning turnabout — said “No thanks” after getting a better deal from Comcast in South Philly. #Inquirer gift article. #basketball

In 2015 when #JimmyCarter’s last book came out, I planned to take my then-7yo to the Free #Library of Philadelphia where Carter was doing a book signing. I wanted him to meet the president who presided over the Camp David Accords. But when Carter was diagnosed with cancer the tour was cancelled.

So now I’m sharing with my now-17yo the Philly #Inquirer’s comprehensive appreciation of Carter — who died today at 100, RIP — and esp his post-presidential work. Gift link.
