Gavin<p>Well, it has been over 25 years, but I've just bought some <a href="https://toot.wales/tags/music" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>music</span></a> merch. An <a href="https://toot.wales/tags/Insomnium" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Insomnium</span></a> t-shirt. </p><p>The midlife crisis is back on! 🤣 </p><p>It is pretty much all I wore through my teens, although that was mostly Metallica, Fear Factory and Pearl Jam. Finnish melodic death metal is a bit of a departure from that I guess. </p><p>I've been eyeing up a Paradise Lost t-shirt as well. Soon...</p>

Angry Metal Guy<p><a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/dawn-of-solace-affliction-vortex-review/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Dawn of Solace – Affliction Vortex Review</a></p><p><i>By Steel Druhm</i></p><p>When Tuomas Saukkonen of <strong>Wolfheart</strong>, <strong>Before the Dawn</strong>, and <strong>Black Sun Aeon</strong> fame resurrected his <strong>Dawn of Solace</strong> project with the help of mighty Goth vocalist Mikko Heikkilä (ex-<strong>Sinamore</strong>) for 2020s <em>Waves</em>, big things happened. The duo’s experience working on <strong>Black Sun Aeon</strong> paid dividends and together they created a rich, engrossing, highly memorable slab of melancholic doom/death dripping with Finnish sadboi glory. <em>Waves</em> ended up my <a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/steel-druhms-top-tenish-of-2020/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Record o’ the Year for 2020</a> and I still break it out when winter winds begin to blow. 2022s <em>Flames of Perdition</em> was a worthy follow-up though it couldn’t quite reach the same lofty heights as its predecessor. <em>Affliction Vortex</em> is the third collaboration between Toumas and Mikko under the <strong>Dawn of Solace</strong> banner and wisely, they haven’t tweaked the formula much. It’s still uber-glum melo-doom designed for a cold winter’s night introspection and all the key elements are in place. But can it hope to rival the maudlin majesty of <em>Waves</em>?</p><p>Not a chance, but it’s hard to resist what Tuomas and Mikko brew up nonetheless. Toumas has proven himself a master craftsman when it comes to weepy, despondent guitar work and sullen writing, and he’s lost none of his edge. When paired with Mikko’s smooth but pained vocals, good things are bound to happen. First proper track “Murder” is a classic <strong>Dawn of Solace</strong> composition, weighed down with forlorn guitar lines and carried expertly by Mikko’s despondent crooning. It’s exactly the kind of song you expect and desire from the duo and it doesn’t disappoint. This would have sat well on <em>Waves</em>, and no further compliments need be paid. “Fortress” begins life sounding like something off <strong>Katatonia</strong>’s <em>Viva Emptiness</em> with tense, <del>angular</del> riffs, before Toumas comes in with weighty death bellows and trilling harmonies that take things back to Finnish environs. “Into the Light” sounds like an old <strong>Black Sun Aeon</strong> song dug up and reworked, and I’m predestined to like it due to the downcast riffs and Finnish graveyard aesthetic. Tuomas delivers icy black rasps for extra chills and all is well.</p><p>The album crests with “Rival” – one of the best songs to come out of the Tuomas/Mikko collaboration, which is saying something. Mikko stretches himself vocally, providing an emotive journey that climaxes with a stellar chorus that hits just right. It’s sullen but vibrant and I can’t get enough of it. “Dream” is another stone-cold killer, leveraging Mikko’s vocal talents for maximum payoff as Tuomas roars in the background. Shades of <strong>Rapture</strong> live large in this one, but it’s undeniably a Tuomas joint. Some songs like “Invitation” recycle the sounds of <strong>Before the Dawn</strong> and <strong>Black Sun Aeon</strong> more than others, but it’s done toward good ends. “Perennial” is an interesting cut, slower, heavier and more dependent on Tuomas’ death grunts while Mikko alters his delivery toward something more rock-based. It stands out and almost feels out of place, but it works. At a tight 39 minutes, there’s no unsightly padding and only one track breaks the 4-minute barrier. This makes for a brisk, engaging spin with a solid replay factor.</p><p></p><p>What more can be said of the talents of this duo? Tuomas has proven his worth on countless albums spanning multiple genres and he continues to find inspiration in the darker side of life and the human psyche. He excels at crafting depressive doom and his riffcraft is always high quality. There are many of his cold, fragile, and morose leads here and plenty of his Gothy trilling and harmonizing too. His death roars and blackened rasps are good as always, injecting extremity into the melancholy while adding an effective counterpoint to Mikko’s disconsolate singing. Speaking of which, Mikko is always a slam dunk when it comes to this kind of music. He’s the prototype of a Goth metal singer and his voice is perfectly suited to the dejected songcraft. This is one of those pairings you can count on to deliver, and they do it again here.</p><p>I doubt <strong>Dawn of Solace</strong> will ever top what they accomplished on <em>Waves</em>, but three albums into the Mikko era, they’ve done nothing but deliver high quality output. <em>Affliction Vortex</em> is more or less the equal to <em>Flames of Perdition</em> with major highs and no duds. They’ve found a sweet spot in the sadboi doom genre and I hope they continue to mine it for more gems. I’ll keep buying until they hit the unruly Balrog.</p> <p></p><p><strong>Rating:</strong> 3.5/5.0<br><strong>DR:</strong> 6 | <strong>Format Reviewed:</strong> 320 kbps mp3<br><strong>Label:</strong> <a href="https://ucm.one/en/music-labels/noble-demon/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Noble Demon</a><br><strong>Websites</strong>: <a href="https://dawnofsolace.bandcamp.com/album/affliction-vortex" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">dawnofsolace.bandcamp.com</a> | <a href="https://www.facebook.com/dawnofsolace/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">facebook.com/dawnofsolace</a> |<br><strong>Releases Worldwide:</strong> February 14th, 2025</p><p><a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/2025/" target="_blank">#2025</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/35/" target="_blank">#35</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/affliction-vortex/" target="_blank">#AfflictionVortex</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/before-the-dawn/" target="_blank">#BeforeTheDawn</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/black-sun-aeon/" target="_blank">#BlackSunAeon</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/dawn-of-solace/" target="_blank">#DawnOfSolace</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/doom-metal/" target="_blank">#DoomMetal</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/finnish-metal/" target="_blank">#FinnishMetal</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/flames-of-perdition/" target="_blank">#FlamesOfPerdition</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/insomnium/" target="_blank">#Insomnium</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/katatonia/" target="_blank">#Katatonia</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/noble-demon/" target="_blank">#NobleDemon</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/rapture/" target="_blank">#Rapture</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/review/" target="_blank">#Review</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/reviews/" target="_blank">#Reviews</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/waves/" target="_blank">#Waves</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/wolfheart/" target="_blank">#Wolfheart</a></p>

Angry Metal Guy<p><a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/harakiri-for-the-sky-scorched-earth-review/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Harakiri for the Sky – Scorched Earth Review</a></p><p><i>By Dear Hollow</i></p><p><strong>Harakiri for the Sky</strong> is one of those bands that is consistently very good but constantly eludes greatness. The Austrian duo’s grasp on melody is second to none, pairing yearning atmospheres with blackened aggression and meditative tempos, resolute in its muscular weight and melodic motifs without devolving into either jadedness nor frailty. While devoted to the style’s trademark slow-burning growth, they constantly avoid the pitfalls of the “post-black” descriptor, refusing to fall into the weak and twinkly shenanigans of their counterparts. However, composition remains mid-tempo and largely too safely confined to the overlapping of predictable melodies and their organic resolutions. This is not a bad thing and <em>Scorched Earth</em> makes that clear.</p><p><strong>Harakiri for the Sky</strong> has made its trademark unmistakable, and had five full-lengths of practice in doing so. Instrumentals provided by Matthias Sollak are richly layered with heart-wrenching melodies and bound by thick plodding riffs with the edge of blackened rawness, while J.J.’s formidable barks communicate both riveting charisma and rending pain alike in a bit of a post-hardcore spin. Career highlights like <a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/harakiri-sky-iii-trauma-review/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">2016’s <em>III: Trauma</em></a> and <a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/harakiri-for-the-sky-maere-review/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">2021’s <em>Mære</em></a> firmly establish this balance and run with it, while <a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/harakiri-for-the-sky-arson-review/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">2018’s <em>Arson</em></a> fell into forgettable territory by virtue of simply being in an excellent discography. Frankly, that’s a fantastic problem to have, and I had no doubts that <em>Scorched Earth</em> was going to be anything short of enjoyable. Featuring guests like Tim Yatras of <strong>Austere</strong> and Serena Cherry of <strong>Svalbard</strong> and <strong>Noctule</strong> contributing to this instrumental and vocal tapestry,<a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/harakiri-for-the-sky-scorched-earth-review/#fn-209965-1" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">1</a> <em>Scorched Earth</em> feels like the natural next step for <strong>Harakiri for the Sky</strong> in renewed vigor and intensity.</p><p></p><p><strong>Harakiri for the Sky</strong>’s grasp on melody remains largely the same, retaining the “twinkly” description but imbued with a heartbreak reminiscent of more depressive styles. <em>Scorched Earth</em> descends deeper into this dirge, with solemn passages and slower tempos letting the breadth of harmony and desperation echo further across its empty outstretched hands. The approach remains very simple, with Sollak’s chord progressions doing the talking in all their natural crescendos and organic dissolutions. Tracks can take on a nearly folky feel reminiscent of melodeath greats like <strong>Insomnium</strong> or <strong>Amorphis</strong> (“Heal Me,” “With Autumn I’ll Surrender”), while the clever layering of riffs, leads, and melodic motifs offer a place of utmost emotional intensity between placid passages of yearning (“Keep Me Longing,” “No Graves But the Sea”), while notable tension in unorthodox chord progressions adds a texture beyond just “pretty black metal” (“Without You I’m Just a Sad Song,” “I Was Just Another Promise You Couldn’t Keep”). While <strong>Austere</strong>’s Tim Yatras performance is difficult to discern in “Heal Me,” <strong>Svalbard</strong>/<strong>Noctule</strong>’s Serena Cherry lends her sirenic croons in closer “Too Late for Goodbyes,” ending <em>Scorched Earth</em> on a solemn and desolate note.</p><p><strong></strong></p><p><strong>Harakiri for the Sky</strong>’s melody, although front and center, is bolstered by tracks featuring a more unpredictable instrumental presence than before. A voiceless venom keeps the sound grounded, as more morose and beautiful movements are contrasted with heavier riffs and moments of darkness that bare a track’s teeth. While the rhythmic chugs kick through the beauty with recklessness (“Without You I’m Just a Sad Song,” “With Autumn I’ll Surrender”) and more upbeat punk rhythms and blastbeats inject a blasting vigor (“No Graves But the Sea,” “Keep Me Longing,” “Too Late for Goodbyes”), dissonance serves as a necessary and ugly thread to keeping the hyper-melodic palette from getting too much (“Heal Me,” “I Was Just Another Promise You Couldn’t Keep). While the vast majority of <em>Scorched Earth </em>is dominated by beauty, it’s nice to have more dimension and more humanity from <strong>Harakiri for the Sky</strong> in its darker passages.</p><p>At its core, <em>Scorched Earth</em> is quintessential <strong>Harakiri for the Sky</strong>. Setting out with more reckless elements such as heavier riffs, blackened blastbeats, or a touch of dissonance, it feels a tad more dangerous and experimental than in previous iterations.<a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/harakiri-for-the-sky-scorched-earth-review/#fn-209965-2" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">2</a> However, the epitome of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” formula, <strong>Harakiri for the Sky</strong> plays it close to the vest with the true star of the show: layers and layers of melody. While shorter than Mære, <em>Scorched Earth</em> is nonetheless daunting in its hour length, and its hyper-melodicism can oft grow tiring while J.J.’s post-hardcore-influenced barks has always felt slightly out of place against the crystalline melody, <strong>Harakiri for the Sky</strong> remains amazingly melodic and always pleasant to listen to. <em>Scorched Earth</em>, once again, is frustratingly safe – truly the act’s signature.</p> <p><strong>Rating:</strong> 3.5/5.0<br><strong>DR:</strong> 6 | <strong>Format Reviewed:</strong> 320 kb/s mp3<br><strong>Label:</strong> <a href="https://shop.aoprecords.de/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">AOP Records</a><br><strong>Websites:</strong> <a href="http://harakirifortheskyofficial.bandcamp.com" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">harakirifortheskyofficial.bandcamp.com</a> | <a href="http://facebook.com/HarakiriForTheSky" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">facebook.com/HarakiriForTheSky</a><br><strong>Releases Worldwide:</strong> January 24th, 2025</p><p><a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/2025/" target="_blank">#2025</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/35/" target="_blank">#35</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/amorphis/" target="_blank">#Amorphis</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/aop-records/" target="_blank">#AOPRecords</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/austere/" target="_blank">#Austere</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/austrian-metal/" target="_blank">#AustrianMetal</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/backwards-charm/" target="_blank">#BackwardsCharm</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/black-metal/" target="_blank">#BlackMetal</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/groza/" target="_blank">#Groza</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/harakiri-for-the-sky/" target="_blank">#HarakiriForTheSky</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/insomnium/" target="_blank">#Insomnium</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/jan25/" target="_blank">#Jan25</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/karg/" target="_blank">#Karg</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/megadeth/" target="_blank">#Megadeth</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/melodic-black-metal/" target="_blank">#MelodicBlackMetal</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/noctule/" target="_blank">#Noctule</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/post-black-metal/" target="_blank">#PostBlackMetal</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/post-hardcore/" target="_blank">#PostHardcore</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/radiohead/" target="_blank">#Radiohead</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/review/" target="_blank">#Review</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/reviews/" target="_blank">#Reviews</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/scorched-earth/" target="_blank">#ScorchedEarth</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/svalbard/" target="_blank">#Svalbard</a></p>
Angry Metal Guy<p><a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/aeon-of-awareness-the-embracing-light-of-rarohenga-review/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Aeon of Awareness – The Embracing Light of Rarohenga Review</a></p><p><i>By GardensTale</i></p><p>You know, I’m rather proud of the impact we have at AMG. Bands we spotlight see a measurable increase in sales and engagement, even when the review did not come with enthusiastic recommendations. We’re receiving more and more promos directly from bands with a request for review, many of them unsigned. It takes balls to do that, and I think that deserves reward. The reward is brutal, uncompromising honesty. I’ve decided to focus on these promos more this year, and first in line is <em>The Embracing Light of Rarohenga</em>, the debut from German melodeath outfit <strong>Aeon of Awareness</strong>.</p><p>Considering the theme comes from Māori mythology and some of the lyrics are in its language, I was starting to think founder Per Lümbersson or vocalist Meta List must have had Māori roots, but I was mistaken. If you expected those influences to extend to the music, like how <strong>Alien Weaponry</strong> uses Haka structures in their riffs, you’d be mistaken, too. Instead, <strong>Aeon of Awareness</strong> pays tribute primarily to chunky Scandinavian melodic death, most obviously <strong>Amon Amarth</strong>. Though some tracks (“Lebenslast,” “Hine-nui-te-pō”) wrap the package in more melancholic, <strong>Insomnium</strong>my bookends, once the big mid-paced riffs start coming, they don’t stop coming. While arguably derivative, the hooks have the required size and energy to get the head bobbing and the face stanking, and they are more than a match for the Swedish Vikings’ more recent offers, in particular the thundering main riff of “Lebenslast.”</p><p></p><p>The back half branches out a little more. “Ira Di(e)mensions” hikes the speed and aggression up to something more akin to <strong>Unleashed</strong>, and “Fort Forest” holds a thrashy edge before gradually slowing down past the midway point. “King Kauri” even throws in some harmonies that seem to be inspired by <strong>Be’lakor</strong>. Though <strong>Aeon of Awareness</strong> still doesn’t escape the feeling of swéjà vu, it mixes up the compositions and varies the pace and approach enough to keep <em>Rarohenga</em> reasonably fresh and engaging across the brisk 40 minutes.</p><p></p><p>But where the guitars steal the show with fun headbangable riffwork, and the bass puts on a nice supporting rumble, the vocals and drums lag behind. Neither is outright bad, though. The growls simply lack both personality and impact, remaining confined to a low, stoic and slightly breathy growl, with occasional backup from an unconvincing blackened rasp. There’s not much variety to its delivery, and that leads to levelling out the intensity of the music as a whole, paying with dynamics in execution more than in songwriting. The drums are a different issue though. They are played with competence and enthusiasm, but everything sounds so triggered I actually thought it was a drum machine at first. Every kick and every snare is at the exact same volume, which can get grating fast when the blasts begin. I’m not enough of a music producer to deduce the cause of the problem; all I know is, despite crediting a human drummer, they sound as mechanical as programmed drums.</p><p>All things considered, <em>The Embracing Light of Rarohenga</em> is a promising debut with a few issues holding it back. The core is there; solid songwriting, strong hooks, a good sense of flow and variety. Aside from the drums, the production is competent, the mix very decent. But <strong>Aeon of Awareness</strong> desperately needs something to stand out from the crowd. Wearing your inspirations on your sleeve is not a problem when you are firing on every cylinder across the board harder than any of your peers, but with quite average vocals and the issue of the flat-sounding drums, this band is not up to that level yet. But for those craving a bite-size dose of <strong>Amarth</strong>ian riffs, you won’t be disappointed.</p> <p><strong>Rating:</strong> 2.5/5.0<br><strong>DR:</strong> 8 | <strong>Format Reviewed:</strong> 320 kb/s mp3<br><strong>Label:</strong> Self-released<br><strong>Websites:</strong> <a href="http://aeonofawareness.bandcamp.com" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">aeonofawareness.bandcamp.com</a> | <a href="http://aeonofawareness.com" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">aeonofawareness.com</a> | <a href="http://facebook.com/AoA666" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">facebook.com/AoA666</a><br><strong>Releases Worldwide:</strong> January 17th, 2025</p><p><a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/2-5/" target="_blank">#25</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/2025/" target="_blank">#2025</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/aeon-of-awareness/" target="_blank">#AeonOfAwareness</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/alien-weaponry/" target="_blank">#AlienWeaponry</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/amon-amarth/" target="_blank">#AmonAmarth</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/belakor/" target="_blank">#BeLakor</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/german-metal/" target="_blank">#GermanMetal</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/insomnium/" target="_blank">#Insomnium</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/jan25/" target="_blank">#Jan25</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/melodic-death-metal/" target="_blank">#MelodicDeathMetal</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/review/" target="_blank">#Review</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/reviews/" target="_blank">#Reviews</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/self-released/" target="_blank">#SelfReleased</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/the-embracing-light-of-rarohenga/" target="_blank">#TheEmbracingLightOfRarohenga</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/unleashed/" target="_blank">#Unleashed</a></p>

Angry Metal Guy<p><a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/thy-kingdom-will-burn-the-loss-and-redemption-review/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Thy Kingdom Will Burn – The Loss and Redemption Review</a></p><p><i>By Dr. A.N. Grier</i></p><p><span class="">Scarlet Records have been around for some time, quietly snatching up every power, symphonic, and corset-core outfit in Italy. Why are there so many of these acts in a country of its size, you ask? I-a have-a no idea-a. So, it was a great surprise when I picked up this rando from their label, neither Italian nor any of the aforementioned genre abominations. <b>Thy Kingdom Will Burn</b> hails from the frozen wastelands of Finland and plays sad-boi melodic death metal. Like neighboring melodeath elite, <b>Thy Kingdom Will Burn</b> sports the genre standards of bands like <b>Insomnium</b> and <b>Dark Tranquillity</b> while tapping the vein of old-school <b>At the Gates</b>. Don’t expect any new directions or genre-shaping songwriting decisions, but they’re solid at what they do. Having only released LPs since 2021, it’s surprising (and maybe a little scary?) that <i>The Loss and Redemption</i> is the band’s third album. Regardless, this little prolific band is here to shed tears, shred balls, and possibly recruit a new fan.</span></p><p><span class="">One thing that can be said about <b>Thy Kingdom Will Burn</b> is that they are an acquired taste. Not in a negative way because there are plenty of bands like that. But, many of the transitions between gruffs and cleans can be jarring at times, though the diversity is pleasing with the different flavors of cleans. If you dislike the forced gruffs of <b>Trivium</b>’s Matt Heafy, you’ll have some difficulty here. They aren’t identical but it’s pretty damn close. That said, they’re good at writing passionate, melodic pieces. The band continues to find their voice and <i>The Loss and Redemption</i> is their best record yet. So, get the tissues ready, stretch that neck out, and prepare for things you’ve heard before that still might have you wrinkling your brow.</span></p><p></p><p><span class="">“Perpetual Void” is a strong song from the band and a great way to kick off the album. It incorporates many of the individual techniques you’ll hear throughout the album but into a single song. Opening with a melodic introduction, it settles into a groove before those previously mentioned snarls hit the ears. As the track rises and falls, building the atmosphere, we find a gentle, bass-led passage that precedes the erupting, memorable chorus. In six minutes, you’ll traverse passionate sections, happy-go-lucky interludes, and a stargazing chorus that grows stronger as it goes. “Sydänyö” bookends the album by taking elements from the opener and emptying the pantry. While the song swirls in and out of melodic passages, using clean guitars to set the mood, it also includes one of the band’s heaviest riffs. Toss in some folkiness, orchestration, and piano to offset the concrete-cracking drive of the song, and your heart will ache as much as your head will bang.</span></p><p></p><p><span class="">By the time you get to the closer, you’re used to the folky elements of <i>The Loss and Redemption</i>. But, I was not prepared for the extent of it in “Obscure Existence.” It’s great, and I love it. But coming off “Perpetual Void,” I did not expect the folkery and upbeat gallop that eventually transitions into some <b>Dark Tranquillity</b> territories. This song is also the first introduction to the album’s piano usage, which is quite pleasing to the ears. These surprises kept me inspired enough to spin the album again. However, some surprises do not work. Case in point, “Forever in Dark.” This gorgeous song didn’t deserve the spoken-word segments that derail the beautiful flow and heart-wrenching chorus. That said, the build and final iteration of the chorus is worth it—even if I cringe with each spoken-word interlude that corrupts its beauty.</span></p><p><span class="">There are plenty of other highlight moments in <i>The Loss and Redemption</i>, but not everything works in the confined structure of a song. “Martyrs of Killing Floor”<a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/thy-kingdom-will-burn-the-loss-and-redemption-review/#fn-210149-1" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">1</a> has a lot of promise, but with all its mood shifts and bizarre lyrics, I’m left waiting for it to end. “Suffering Sky” has its moments but drags on too long and the chorus is boring. Dropping this track would have helped the flow and omitted almost six minutes of the album’s nearly fifty-minute runtime. All in all, <i>The Loss and Redemption</i> sees <b>Thy Kingdom Will Burn</b> continuing to grow as a band. The songwriting is their strongest, but most sinks only hold so many dishes.<a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/thy-kingdom-will-burn-the-loss-and-redemption-review/#fn-210149-2" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">2</a> If the band can reel in some of the chaotic qualities of their song structures, <b>Thy Kingdom Will Burn</b> could be a strong contributor to the melodeath world. While Scarlet Records needs to send me some 320 kbps promos, the dynamics of this record are lush, letting you hear nearly every instrument and the individual orchestral elements. If you like melodeath, you might find something worthwhile in <em>The Loss and Redemption</em>.</span></p> <p><strong>Rating:</strong> 3.0/5.0<br><strong>DR:</strong> 8 | <strong>Format Reviewed:</strong> 256 kb/s mp3<br><strong>Label:</strong> <a href="https://scarletrecords.com/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Scarlet Records</a><br><strong>Websites:</strong> <a href="https://thykingdomwillburn.bandcamp.com/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">thykingdomwillburn.bandcamp.com</a> | <a href="https://www.facebook.com/thykingdomwillburn/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">facebook.com/thykingdomwillburn</a><br><strong>Releases Worldwide:</strong> January 17th, 2025</p><p><a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/2025/" target="_blank">#2025</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/30/" target="_blank">#30</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/at-the-gates/" target="_blank">#AtTheGates</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/dark-tranquillity/" target="_blank">#DarkTranquillity</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/finnish-metal/" target="_blank">#FinnishMetal</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/insomnium/" target="_blank">#Insomnium</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/jan25/" target="_blank">#Jan25</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/melodic-death-metal/" target="_blank">#MelodicDeathMetal</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/review/" target="_blank">#Review</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/reviews/" target="_blank">#Reviews</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/scarlet-records/" target="_blank">#ScarletRecords</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/the-loss-and-redemption/" target="_blank">#TheLossAndRedemption</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/thy-kingdom-will-burn/" target="_blank">#ThyKingdomWillBurn</a></p>
