Jewish conversations<p>Julius Lester was born the son of a black Methodist minister in the south. His book Lovesong is a beautifully written account of his spiritual journey away from the conventions of his Southern heritage and Methodist upbringing, culminating in his personal self-discovery through a conversion to Judaism.</p><p><a href="https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Lovesong/Julius-Lester/9781611458022" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">simonandschuster.com/books/Lov</span><span class="invisible">esong/Julius-Lester/9781611458022</span></a></p><p>@judaism@a.gup.pe <br />@mazeldon@a.gup.pe <br /><a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/Mazeldon" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Mazeldon</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/Jewish" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Jewish</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/Judaism" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Judaism</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/gerut" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>gerut</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/conversion" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>conversion</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/Lovesong" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Lovesong</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/JuliusLester" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>JuliusLester</span></a></p>

How are you?” sufficient enough.</p><p><a href="https://www.facebook.com/julius.lester.3/posts/10156948921839676?comment_id=545000580599050&amp;notif_id=1671453867397250&amp;notif_t=comment_mention&amp;ref=notif" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">facebook.com/julius.lester.3/p</span><span class="invisible">osts/10156948921839676?comment_id=545000580599050&amp;notif_id=1671453867397250&amp;notif_t=comment_mention&amp;ref=notif</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/JuliusLester" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>JuliusLester</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Chanukah" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Chanukah</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Hanukkah" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Hanukkah</span></a></p>
Rebecca M. Townsend<p>From time to time, I would sit in on Prof. Julius Lester's classes at UMASS, literally on the floor, to hear him lecture. My mom was a reading teacher and loved his books. One year I asked him if he would please sign some books of his for a gift for my mother. He did. She loved the gift.</p><p>It has been 12 years since she died. Five for him.</p><p>I remembered him and that story this morning because a friend shared an essay he wrote on fb. <br>I'll repost it here. </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/JuliusLester" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>JuliusLester</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/UMass" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>UMass</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/gift" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gift</span></a></p>
