Seven-spot ladybird

The most common of ladybirds in the UK – they’re widespread and found in all kinds of environments, including gardens, parks, grassland and coastal areas. A gardener’s best friend, they love to eat the aphids that can damage plants. Aptly named, these ladybirds have bright red wing cases dotted with seven black spots; they’re brightly coloured to warn predators that they taste bad.

28/09/2024 - Sunny morning walk from the house. Just me today. Some nice wild flowers by the roadside. Lots of pink-footed geese flying. A few swallows still about. Skylarks singing overhead. The sunshine felt good. It was a nice walk taken slow. Missed Mrs Spaceways being there to see the good stuff though.

I visited the Ashley Dene research farm of #LincolnUniversityNZ on Thursday. Part of the farm is being used for trials on how to keep healthier dairy cows while reducing farm carbon emissions. That includes diverse pastures, scratching posts for the cows (very popular) and fenced off plots of natives and perennial fodder crops.

The highlight was the bamboo stakes in the plantings, all filled with over-wintering 11-spotted #ladybirds. 😄
