Lately this instance has been more and more expensive to maintain (db/files only grow), Patreon income hasn't kept up, and my personal enjoyment of it has gone down (uspol doesn't help one bit). I really don't want to just kill it, but I'm not sure what options I have.

Ideas:

A. well, kill it completely :mastubadon:🔫
B. enable the thing where semi-old posts gets nuked regularly (not a permanent solution)
C. transfer to someone else to own and host it

:skull360: We've successfully upgraded our Mastodon server to v4.5.0-alpha.1+mementomods-2025-08-02.

This update includes the latest build, so everything should be as up to date as possible.

As always, if you notice anything unusual or buggy, please let me or any of the other admins know.

Enjoy your time here! Feel free to message me if you have any questions or thoughts. :bunhdheart:

Server upgrade coming probably mid-August. The current server is just barely able to keep up with the growing load.

This will cost more. Contributions are greatly appreciated: hcb.hackclub.com/donations/sta

I currently cover most of the costs, and am willing to keep doing so, but it would be great if this could be more self-sustaining.

After a night of crunching my instance is caught up again. Turned out my ingress process had crashed or something after the v4.4.0 update 8 days ago. Should check my timeline a bit more often to detect things like that. Or build monitoring. :-) #mastoadmin

Has anyone ever run a tootctl accounts prune ("prune remote accounts that never interacted with local users") on an instance with a couple hundred local users?

Any unexpected side effects? I assume it will generate a lot of broken threads further back in history?

⚠️ FOLLOWUP PSA ⚠️

if you have open registrations on your instance this current spam wave would be a great impetus to switch to approval-based signups

the extra moderation workload for having fully open signups is MASSIVE and for basically zero reward. it doesn't take much time or effort to vet and approve new users, but it takes much more to clean up the damage a shitload of spam accounts can do
