>>We conclude that the presence of fibrinaloid #microclots can indeed significantly account for the symptoms of #POTS associated with #LongCovid (and likely other syndromes), just as they can for other symptoms, post-exertional symptom exacerbation, and the generation of autoantibodies<<

Possible Role of Fibrinaloid Microclots in Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS): Focus on Long COVID - PMC

New research on severe #microclots and #POTS!

“We here develop the argument, with accompanying evidence, that fibrinaloid microclots, through their ability to block the flow of blood through microcapillaries and thus cause tissue hypoxia, are not simply correlated with but in fact, by preceding it, may be a chief intermediary cause of POTS, in which tachycardia is simply the body’s exaggerated ‘physiological’ response to hypoxia.”

MDPIPossible Role of Fibrinaloid Microclots in Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS): Focus on Long COVIDPostural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is a common accompaniment of a variety of chronic, inflammatory diseases, including long COVID, as are small, insoluble, ‘fibrinaloid’ microclots. We here develop the argument, with accompanying evidence, that fibrinaloid microclots, through their ability to block the flow of blood through microcapillaries and thus cause tissue hypoxia, are not simply correlated with but in fact, by preceding it, may be a chief intermediary cause of POTS, in which tachycardia is simply the body’s exaggerated ‘physiological’ response to hypoxia. Similar reasoning accounts for the symptoms bundled under the term ‘fatigue’. Amyloids are known to be membrane disruptors, and when their targets are nerve membranes, this can explain neurotoxicity and hence the autonomic nervous system dysfunction that contributes to POTS. Taken together as a system view, we indicate that fibrinaloid microclots can serve to link POTS and fatigue in long COVID in a manner that is at once both mechanistic and explanatory. This has clear implications for the treatment of such diseases.

Many people with #LongCovid feel tired, unwell and in pain for lengthy periods after exercise, and researchers say they now know why. .

Experts say they have evidence that biological changes are to blame, such as severe #MuscleDamage, #mitochondrial problems and the presence of #microclots in the body.

MicroClots

How microclots and platelet pathology may be useful in clinical investigations:

Not only (simply) the size/numbers of micro clots present in healthy vs Long COVID but their:

- content
- activity
- biochemical characteristics

We cannot ignore the role of hyperactivated platelets in endothelialitis.

Ultimately, platelet pathologies and microclots are fundamentally involved in developing thrombotic endothelialitis.

Fibrin microthrombi in bladder urothelium after #SARSCoV2 infection: Case report

shorturl.at/cmDN5

“this study suggest[s] increased levels of IL-8 in the bladder may drive microthrombi in the bladder vasculature & urinary IL-8 levels might provide a means of detecting if a patient is at risk for developing symptoms from these microthrombi after SARS-CoV-2 infection”

"NPR interviewed scientists who are looking at microclots found in the blood of people with #LongCOVID. These #microclots are unusual in that they are made up mostly of an abnormal type of fibrin and form unusual shapes called amyloid. These fibrin amyloid microclots may be a biomarker for long COVID. Another group had an article on microclots and long COVID. They suggest the term “spike protein induced thrombotic vasculitis” (SITV) to describe the pathophysiology of long #COVID #clotting."

#Texas folks—

Celestia Diagnostics in #Dallas is looking for volunteers for their #microclots research. Cool opportunity as it’s one of the most promising avenues in #LongCovid research, but currently really hard to access testing for (one of the things they’re hoping to fix).

If you’re up for a blood draw either as healthy control (thank you 🙌🏻) or as someone w/LC #MECFS #RheumatoidArthritis or #Diabetes (thank you also 💛), you can sign up here:

Rapid flow cytometric analysis of
fibrin amyloid micro clots in Long Covid

The application of imaging flow cytometry to evaluate the presence, concentration, and size of fibrinoid micro clots has the potential to be a diagnostic tool for individuals suffering from Long COVID.
