A folk saint is one chosen by the people as opposed to those saints canonised by the Holy Roman church. Folk saints are not recognised by the Vatican but by the people who love them. Saint Expedite is known as the patron saint of rapid solutions. He is prayed to when a situation needs to be turned around, hurried along or changed. He is revered in Spain, Portugal, Italy, and Latin America and is highly regarded in New Orleans, where he is considered to be a patron of the city…He is the unofficial saint of emergencies, businesses, shop keepers, examinees and basically anyone who needs a rapid solution! So it is an unlucky flower to pick, for that would provoke a thunderstorm (it was actually called Thunderbolt in Staffordshire). To dream of anemones predicts love, though in Staffordshire it was reckoned unwise to take one anywhere near a wedding, for it would be bound to cause bad luck. This ill-luck nature is of some antiquity, for the Egyptians looked upon it as the emblem of sickness, and the Chinese call it the Flower of Death. This reputation is also quite widespread in Europe. When they encountered the primordial deity Maam, whose name may be translated as “Grandfather” or “Ancient One,” they attempted to replace him with Saint Simon. Their plan backfired. Instead of the Mayan god fading discreetly into the identity of the saint, Maximón, as he became known, took on a whole new life and personality of his own: defiant, disobedient, sometimes profane, but always extremely powerful. They measured about 2-3/4" x 3-3/4". They came in a small black box which said "OBLIQUE STRATEGIES" on one of the top's long sides and "BRIAN ENO/PETER SCHMIDT" on the other side. The cards were solid black on one side, and had the aphorisms printed in a 10-point sans serif face on the other…The deck itself had its origins in the discovery by Brian Eno that both he and his friend Peter Schmidt (a British painter whose works grace the cover of "Evening Star"…) tended to keep a set of basic working principles which guided them through the kinds of moments of pressure - either working through a heavy painting session or watching the clock tick while you're running up a big buck studio bill. Both Schmidt and Eno realized that the pressures of time tended to steer them away from the ways of thinking they found most productive when the pressure was off. Although these paid tribute to her time as a coven member & to the Book of Shadows, & to the notion of Wicca as the Old Religion, most of her emphasis was on her preceding & succeeding life as a solitary practitioner, & testified to the richness of experience open to somebody functioning in that manner. She also, in passing, provided one half of a piece of evidence which, reunited with the other, furnishes a good example of the manner in which the wider society could be instructed in the myth of the Old Religion. In the mid-1960s the archaeologist Philip Rahtz was excavating the summit of Glastonbury Tor. One day he was visited at the work by a witch, who informed him that her people had been accustomed to engage in rites of pagan worship in this dramatic & historic place for centuries. It was love at first sight. Gazing at the plentitude of radishes…I felt a swelling joy. Perhaps I am unusual, and in fact even for me it is rare to be so awed by radishes. This is a thank you to all the people who post about their love for writing and fountain pens on here. Having rekindled my interest in them and buying a new pen with some fantastic coloured ink by #diamineinks its taken me on a path to rediscover writing. I was journaling on my computer so a natural place to start and switch to paper. And this has led me to discover so many ideas that are good for the mind and soul, like #morningpages and #journaling in general. Which has gotten me into bullet journalling. The only downside is, I have started collecting fountain pens and inks! Love it, thank you! #bulletjournal #bujo

They eventually returned to London, where Ethel had some formal artistic education. She served as a nurse between 1914-1919 in World War I and left an interesting correspondence with her brother Arthur, documented with more than a hundred photographs. As many other Britons who experienced the tragedies of the War, Ethel turned to Spiritualism and became herself a medium. In 1920, she started channeling a spirit simply known as J.P.F. and producing paintings for which she claimed no credit, insisting that J.P.F. was the real author. J.P.F. also transmitted to Ethel the teachings of a group of advanced spirits, who explained the meanings of the paintings. These teachings were collected in 1933 in the book «A Goodly Company», that Ethel self-published under the imprint The Chiswick Press. When Juliana was 16 she had her first vision which recurred subsequently several times. Her vision presented the moon in its full splendour, crossed diametrically by a dark stripe. In time she came to understand that the moon symbolized the life of the church on earth, the opaque line, on the other hand, represented the absence of a liturgical feast in honor of Christ's Body and Blood. Many of the processes of carding, dying, spinning and weaving were carried out in the same place — perhaps even by the same person. Evidence for domestic cloth production can be found from every single period of British history right back to the Neolithic, and in some remote parts continued well into the early twentieth century. Open notebook with handwritten text from the post at the of the page with additional text: “Nathan Bailey’s Dictionarium Britannicum of 1730 defines ‘Mothering’ as: ‘A Custom still retained in many places of England, of visiting Parents on Midlent-Sunday; and it seems to be called Mothering, from the Respect in the old Time paid to the Mother Church. It being the Custom for People in old Popish Times to visit their Mother Church on Midlent-Sunday, and to make their Offerings at the High Altar.’ Bailey thus suggests a secularization of a medieval practice, so that people would offer gifts to their own mothers rather than to the church. In the eighteenth century, Mothering” seems to have been a regional custom. Correspondents to the Gentleman’s Magazine in the 1780s are very vague about this day, but believe it may have associations with food or drink. When ‘H.T.’ mentioned ‘furmety on Mothering-Sunday’ in a 1783 communication, another correspondent claimed to be unfamiliar with Mothering Sunday, and observed that others probably were too.” — Claire A. Interestingly, there are also Celtic creation tales that believed that the first woman came from an alder tree, though some Irish tales believe the first man came from an alder tree and the first woman from a rowan tree. It was therefore protective to hang a bundle of alder twigs above the crib of a baby boy and a bundle of rowan twigs above the bed of a baby girl. In Somerset, UK, it was thought that if a traveler passed through an alder copse, that he would never be seen again. An old creepy rhyme that captures this superstition of being trapped in the alder wood goes: ‘I caught the fitful sound,/ Wafted o’er sullen moss and craggy mound,/ Unfruitful solitudes, that seem to upbraid,/ The sun in heaven! But now to form a shade,/ For thee, green alders have together wound, their foliage.’ (Sonnet to Duddon, William Wordsworth)” — Corrine Boyer, Under the Witching Tree (2020).
