An #OpenStreetMap contributor's unfortunate experience while field mapping in India: en.osm.town/@contrapunctus/114

Every OSM contributor should always put their own safety first.

Not all jurisdiction allow citizens to map or collect geographical data (An immigration officer subjected me to an extended interview, and to remind me of the local laws, while I was clearing immigration to attend a mapping conference in India) though in this case, it seems to be somebody from the neighbourhood.

OSM Town | Mapstodon for OpenStreetMapcontrapunctus ✊🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️ (@contrapunctus@en.osm.town)I wasn't sure if I wanted to share this story with the world, but here we go. On the 1st of May, I was beaten up by a crowd while I was out on an #OpenStreetMap survey in Mandāwali, #Delhi, #India. 1/

28 people made 15965 changes yesterday to #OpenStreetMap using mapcomplete.org

Lindert added 15367 points and moved 36 points with the thematic map grb
Streetworker122 added 15 points, answered 112 questions, moved 2 points and deleted 2 points with the thematic maps parkings, food, shops, sports, atm and healthcare
user_5589 uploaded 76 images and detected a plant species with plantnet.org with the thematic map trees

While contributing a little to #OpenStreetMap today (which you have to create an account for) I kept seeing edits from another user in my area, making me guess that they probably gotta live in the same hood as me. That made me wonder if you could use #OSM contributions for #OSINT, in particular for #geolocating contributors.

And yes, of course you can!

OSM states in their #privacy policy that email addresses are never ("intentionally") published, however your user name is public and searchable. So I gave it a little test, I picked a random OSM contributor and based on how their edits are clustered on the map I could make a reasonable guess about the neighborhood they likely live in, see screenshot below. Searching their user name on the web I could quickly identify other accounts on Github and social media, as well their OSM contributions, meaning this works in both directions.

So, while obviously I don't want to discourage anyone from contributing to OSM, I do recommend using a user name that's not easily linkable to your accounts on other websites as well as a unique email address, as you never know if there'll be a leak someday.

I took a bicycle ride through a suburban area at the edge of town where #OpenStreetMap has very poor metadata coverage. It got me lots of Internet Points™, but I can never shake the feeling of looking extremely suspicious when rolling slowly down a residential street, children playing in every garden, peering into each driveway and poking at #StreetComplete on my handlebar-mounted phone after every house.

13/ One final bonus toot - we would be remiss not to mention the absolutely thriving Indonesian #OpenStreetMap community (their local organisation is known in Indonesian as "Perkumpulan OpenStreetMap Indonesia" which yields the delightful abbreviation "POI").

Sadly they don't seem to be active on the fediverse 😞

Check them out, get involved:

Continued thread

This is my 3rd or 4th "serious" incident since I started contributing to #OpenStreetMap in 2016.

The others were -

1. A lawyer-type in the posh neighborhood of Ādarsh Nagar. All he did after loudly arguing with me was to call the frail and aged colony guard to remove me...the latter wasn't about to pick a fight with me, so I was still able to complete my survey in that street. 😅

And remember to regularly contribute to #OpenStreetMap / #OSM throughout the year to optimise the probability of your fellow citizens locating a sausage on democracy day thanks to democracysausage.org

This is no laughing matter and we should not leave any of it to chance.

Thank you for your service.

A solid 24-hour sprint later -- I had to wrangle data from tables in PDFs to get a solid baseline to work with (#csv here: pastebin.com/JGLxQMbT) -- and I've got all of the polling stations for tomorrow's #election in Tarrant county mapped out in #osm #OpenStreetMap :D

overpass-turbo.eu/s/23ok

I experimented a bit within the polling_station:* namespace. Thinking I might be settling into a pattern, at least for #Texas. I dunno if I want to build up explicit relations between polling places and their (typical) associated buildings/areas or not. So for now, I chucked the relation data in a tag instead.

Ideally, future elections won't be such a pain to get bootstrapped; most polling stations tend to stay the same across elections.
