Snapped this while waiting for a pizza. Something about that red sign and the way everyone’s caught mid-moment works for me. The sky is overblown though…after all these years I still do that.

Once again, I've found myself in the middle of nowhere, far from civilization, but taking a little break in my search with a bit of tea. Perched on a rock edge and dressed in my best antique French tuxedo and bowler, I sip on tea while watching the falling water of a waterfall before me. The tails of my jacket drape on the rocks behind me and a vintage Samsonite suitcase acts as a small table to hold my teapot. The brisk winds whip down the chasm caused by eons of water slowly eroding away at the landscape and I huddle under my red parasol, resting on my shoulder, to hide from chill of the wind lapping at my face. The warmth of the tea sustains me (and the many layers of antique wool).

A Little Wattlebird perched vertically on a vertical dead twig, side-lit by strong early morning light. The Little Wattlebird is a medium to large honeyeater, but the smallest of the wattlebirds. It is mostly dark grey-brown above, with faint white shafts on each of the feathers.

A wide expanse of wet sandy mud fills the foreground. Far off in the distance are the tiny figures of a woman and two dogs, walking along the edge of the flat where the sand meets the shallow, incoming tide, almost identical in colour to the flat. Further away still is the relatively low dirt bank of the bay's edge, topped with a dense screen of trees and shrubs.

A suburban hillside partly shrouded in fog at sunrise. The whole scene is lit with a diffuse sepia light, with the more distant ridgeline disappearing into the fog. Running up the hillside are a whole series of powerline catenaries, looping from one pole to the next, and gleaming in the early light like a giant spiderweb caught in the sun.

A tiny crescent moon hangs high in the still dark-blue sky, which occupies half the image. The size of the moon emphasises the blue immensity of the sky's vault. As we descend, the blue gradually lightens almost to white, where it meets several banks of wind-teased cumulus, still with solid cores but with drawn out and wispy outlines. The clouds are all lit bright orange underneath by the coming sun, while their upper and near surfaces are still contrasting grey. Underneath again, a long, black silhouette of a gently rolling suburban ridgeline anchors the image to the ground.
