Tinker ☀️
The Kratky Hydroponic Lettuce Wall will be comprised of a couple of things:

1) A utility shelf with adjustable shelving
2) Full spectrum LED "grow" light strips w/ timer
3) Grow bins

That's it.

The utility shelf can be broken down into the following requirements:
- DANGER!!! WARNING!!! IMPORTANT!!!: The shelves should be able to actually hold the weight of your grow bins. Water is heavy. Many shelves by themselves cannot support the weight of the water and will need support. So check the weight rating on the shelves you get. We'll continue to talk about this further as we built out the shelf.
- ANOTHER DANGER!!! WARNING!!! IMPORTANT!!!: You need a way to anchor your shelves to the wall SECURELY!!! You don't want this thing tipping over. You build it too high and it falls on your kid or dog or cat and they may die. Secure this to your wall. Especially the higher you build it.
- Shelves need to be adjustable to allow enough space for the bin to sit and for the plant to grow
- A way to attach the light strips to the shelf above the grow bin
- Bonus: Make it pretty

The Grow Light Strips can be broken into the following requirements:
- They should fit the length of the shelf you pick and be attachable to it in some way
- You should be able to control them with a timer (either on the light itself or set up with a wall socket timer
- Have a method of increasing the light or decreasing the light (easily add more light strips if needed, or adjust brightness, etc)
- Be full spectrum "grow" light. Note: it does not have to SAY grow light. Sometimes lights are like cakes. A regular white cake is cheap. Add the name "Wedding" to that same cake and it gets expensive. As long as the LED light strip generates enough light for a plant to eat, we're good.

The grow bins can be broken down into the following requirements:
- They should hold water.
- They should be fully opaque and not allow any light into the bin itself.
- They should hold some sort of grow medium to allow a plant to grow on top and provide access to the roots to get into the bin to access the nutrient water
- Bonus: Make them pretty

That's it.

No pumps.
No aerators.
No central reservoir.

Just a place to put a kratky bin and grow lettuce.

We'll tackle how to size and shop for a utility shelf next.

#solarPunk
#indoorGardening
#verticalFarming
#hydroponics
#kratky
#kratkyMethod
#vegetableGardening
#gardening
#postScarcity
#foodSecurity

Tinker ☀️
Oh shit. Gonna build a lettuce wall.

Can't stop. Won't stop.

Design Goals
- Low effort / passive / automated (After initial build, only requires 30 mins of work a week to maintain)
- "Inexpensive" (measured in how quickly it pays for itself compared to shopping at grocery store)
- Small footprint for indoor spaces (uses vertical space as opposed to horizontal space)
- ADHD friendly (you dont have to keep monitoring it. Set and forget)
- Provides entire personal need of leafy greens in continuous fashion
- Provides excess of personal needs in order to continuously share freely with neighbors

(Follow this thread in the coming months to watch the buildout. I'll post design theory and application along. It'll be vendor/brand agnostic. And I'll post up methods to tailor it to your space.)

(Photo below of prototype. It works! Tinker ☀️
The "profit motive" is such a boring motive.

(Note: Don't confuse the "profit motive" with a "survival motive" - In capitalism and corporatism, workers have to earn money just to survive. That's not what I'm talking about here.)

Making money, just for money's sake is stupid.

Further, the "bottom line" of corporate oligarchy puts raw numbers over anything else:

- It does not account for the tertiary non-capital costs such as destroying our lived-in spaces, local environment, and global environment. It destroys people's privacy and well being.

- It encourages built-in/planned obsolescence and disposable, single-use (or short lifespan use) consuming. If a thing has quality, it will be bought less. If a thing breaks down or cant be repaired, folks will continue to buy new ones.

We could have nice things.

We could have high quality things, built to last, built to be repaired, built to be efficient.

We could have pretty things. Things that bring us rest and joy and healing.

If we take care of the things that we need to survive... If we can bring about post-scarcity food, water, shelter, healthcare, and energy...

We could ignore the profit motive.

We could make capitalism obsolete.

We could move beyond survival and into thriving.

#solarPunk #postScarcity

Kinoc-Kayfar ΘΔ⌛
Honestly I feel like while the terms communism and socialism have been corrupted, with the way that most people who call themselves Communists are authoritarian tankies and most people who call themselves socialist are Social Democrats. I feel like the word anarchism is the one word that hasn't changed. Like people who don't know what anarchism is think it's just chaos, but to the people who actually call themselves anarchist still stick to its original meaning. And advocate for a society without hierarchy. Kinoc-Kayfar ΘΔ⌛
Many people have old class narratives for why fascism is rising across the world, such as economic anxiety and others, narratives I have even promoted in the past, however me being a more 21st century intersectional feminist and a pro-tech leftist, I propose a different hypothesis.

I think what's going on is that the internet is a revolutionary technology that has accelerated social progress when it comes to the awareness of marginalized groups, such as queer people, alterhumans, plural systems and more.

It has also created a more global and interconnected world, to the point that authoritarian regimes have to censor the internet, because now any atrocity is now instantly known across the world, even when a US aligned country like Israel commits an atrocity it's no longer possible to hide it.

And I think because of all of the above, I think there's a global reactionary backlash to the accelerated social progress and interconnectedness the internet has created. As you will notice, the reactionary backlash exists regardless of ideology.

From fascist who I don't have to explain why are opposed to it, to transphobic liberals, to communist who see queer people as bourgeois decadence. essentially what's happening is all reactionary forces are uniting regardless of ideology to oppose the accelerated social progress and liberation of marginalized groups, or what these people call "wokeness."

in fact I'll go as far as say it's the reason why now the reactionary forces are trying to censor the internet with things like project 2025. Because they're so scared of the way the internet is creating an interconnected world, that they're afraid of the possibility of it taking away their power.

ultimately the 21st century will be the battle between ultimate progressivism and ultimate conservatism within the ruins of liberalism.

#transhumanism #postscarcity #progressivism #progressive #feminism #fascism

Kinoc-Kayfar ΘΔ⌛
The truth is that socialism has many definitions. Some people define it as government regulations within capitalism. While others define it as the workers controlling the means of production. And if you include tankies they define it as a transitional period to communism.

It's for this reason why I feel like we should go for a new label. since these old labels have been so corrupted and bloated that people can't even agree on what these words even mean.

The truth is that in the 21st century, most people use the word socialism to refer to reformist. While using the word communism to refer to Marxist leninist regimes like the USSR or even authoritarian regimes that are formerly but no longer Marxist leninist like the PRC.

It's for this reason that I think that we have a unique opportunity to rebrand the original definition of what socialism was under a new label. That way appearing as something fresh and new again to people. Since when the system is failing people want an alternative they feel is new and different. not something they feel has already been tried and failed

#socialism #anarchism #postscarcity #cybernetics #resourcebasedeconomy #technocracy

Orion Ussner kidder
So I've read a bit of #Bookchin 's #PostScarcity (riddled with historical errors), and then a good chunk of #Woodcock 's #Anarchism (more interesting, but not convincing), and finally #Chomsky 's #OnAnarchism (the sweet spot).

Chomsky isn't dogmatic. He lives in the real world and makes pragmatic arguments. Dismantling the state is an ultimate goal, but if you go straight for that, a) people get hurt in the meantime, and b) you fail anyway. Chomsky's anarchism is what I can identify with.

Kinoc-Kayfar ΘΔ⌛
I think since in mainstream politics Elon musk has become the face of all things related to Tech. And because of that people are now becoming more anti-tech because of that. I think we left transhumanists need to unite. Since currently as it stands now the pro tech type of leftist is very rare. So because of that we need to create an alliance to slowly break the duopoly between the tech Bros and the anti-tech people until our ideas become mainstream.

#transhumanism #cybernetics #postscarcity
