Tonight's NON-popcorn movie was Berlin Express (1948).

Impressive, with genuine 1947 footage of Paris and Berlin.

It showed a fine touch with dry (even wry) humour in places.

The other half of the household is puzzled as to why only the Germans seemed to be the ones opposed to reunification. Funnily enough, it was an opinion I was exposed to in NZ in the 60's. I was way too young then to make sense of it now.

A++, will watch again.

Lest we forget: “After World War II, West Germany rapidly made the transition from murderous dictatorship to model democracy. Or did it? New documents reveal just how many officials from the Nazi regime found new jobs in Bonn. A surprising number were chosen for senior government positions”

"Gershom Scholem brought kabbalism from the shadows into the lamplight of scholarship. He is the real-life protagonist in Steve Stern’s #novel, A Fool’s Kabbalah; Menke Klepfisch is the novel’s fictional protagonist, and they make an odd pairing. Scholem is traveling #postwar #Europe in search of looted #Jewish #books while, several years earlier, Klepfisch lives in a #Polish #shtetl, a holy fool who finds himself entertaining #Nazi occupiers with his antics."

Shepherd Express · A Fool’s Kabbalah by Steve SternReal-life scholar Gershom Scholem and fictional holy fool Menke Klepfisch are parallel protagonists in a novel that recalls Dostoevsky as well as Isaac Bashevis Singer.

“There should be a Western presence in Ukraine delivering the training of Ukrainian armed forces on their territory.”

Nato troops on the ground in Ukraine makes the consequences of the Russia-Ukraine war “very clear to Putin”, says former armed forces minister James Heappey.

(interesting remarks on number of troups, costs, postwar dangers, spending)
