today is st florians day and there's a tonne of #RFS staff, including all the big wigs, at the state training academy to hand out awards to firefighters that have given exceptional service to their communities

on Friday night our RFS brigade held our 85th birthday event and we recognised 3 new life members. we didn't get as many big wigs to our event but it was strongly attended by our brigade, our families and our residents

it's been a busy weekend here, I've still got a football game to play, but I'm already busted and cannot wait to climb into bed 😂

Weekend #RFS training done for the month. Today we practiced using fire suppressant foam and then drove up to Brogo Dam to check out an area earmarked for a hazard-reduction burn.

The burn area definitely needs it - there's a lot of scrubby undergrowth, standing dead wood, and tree litter on the ground. But it's on *very steep ground*, so that's going to be tricky. And right now, everything on the ground is holding so much moisture we couldn't get a test pile of thatched grass and leaf litter to even catch. A few seconds of smoulder and it went out. At this point, we'd use more drip torch fuel to get it going than we would water to control it. It needs about 3 months of drying out.

Kaboom! Lightning. Close, not too close.

Hazards Near Me dings for a fire. [Looks at map. Leaps up & runs out to road] Phew. It's not at my place. It's down towards Bedford Creek. Moments later, volunteer firies are zooming past, sussing out any action. Happily they're soon heading to where I can see smoke, not where it was reported. Many sirens join in.

The bush is dry. There's no wind.

20 mins later, & I can't see smoke. Hooray! Great response, firies!
