Both follow the same rear-engined formula, and are in the same size bracket but the main influence on the Simca’s design came from collaboration with Fiat, the French company’s main shareholder at the time the 1000 was introduced in 1961. David WilkinsThe four-cylinder Porsche story continued in 1976 with the 924. Breaking with company tradition, the 924 had a front-mounted engine and a ‘transaxle’ gearbox at the rear. Like its predecessor the 914, the 924 started as a joint project with Volkswagen. VW dropped out but still contributed many parts, including the engine, although that was replaced by Porsche units when the car was developed into the 944 and 968.
