Wow. This site about color theory hasn't updated its design since the 90s. It even still has the original ad banners. #retro #90s #webdesign #retroweb

The funniest instance of Wikipedia vandalism was on Sep 27, 2008, when someone edited a core template included numerous times on virtually every page on the site to include a happy birthday message to Avril Lavigne.
The message was added to the top of every single page on the site, overlapping a couple dozen times (hence why it looks a bit darker than the surrounding text). #retroweb
Some Pokémon fansites from the 2000s/2010s. Links in reply.
Fun fact: all of these sites are still online and going strong. Psypokes even still has the exact same design.

Latest rabbit hole/nerdsnipe: #RetroWeb Java applets
There's been a lot of effort to preserve things like Flash and GIFs, but has anyone tried to put together an archive of Java applets? Several web and archive.org searches have come up empty. I did find reference to one book from 1997 that included an applet library on CD, but neither the (physical) book nor its CD are anywhere to be found either.
I can't be the only one who cares about it, am I?
I wrote some notes on using #86Box for #RetroComputing server virtualization. It includes info on using VDE for bridged networking and some tips for time sync and running headless. Maybe worth a read?
So instead of doing something productive today, I made this.
It even has an old-fashioned guestbook! It's written in PHP 4.0 and probably isn't Unicode-safe.
Haven't seen *that* icon in awhile!
Finally time to release that PHP website hit counter I wrote for my retro site after freewebsitehitcounters went down. A graphical hit counter with infinite customization: GTTFCount https://codeberg.org/Chasnah/gttfcount
This was a fun watch.
I can't help but think that projects like Retro Gaiden and 199x.chat are almost like spiritual successors to the sort of culture & communities that arose within BBSes: decentralized, self-hosted, free from big tech influence.
Just found this epic channel! This was quite entertaining Part of me really hates that I missed the golden age of BBS.
https://marginalia-search.com/
it's a search engine designed to find niche things rather than what's most popular
* has filters for blogs, forums, smallweb, and it doesnt hide stuff just for being old
* really good for finding community made stuff and hobbyist stuff
* prioritises non commercial content
It's really a different use case entirely to things like google, but has so much more interesting content not just generic seo made articles

Good morning, fellow geekies with impeccable taste! Happy Thursday!
I love their HTTP-only website with its space-themed background, animated horizontal rule, visitor counter, and all the classic 90s Geocities Home Page vibes (It is missing "Built with Notepad" and "Download Netscape" buttons) http://thecybertronicspree.com/
This is not the web Netscape Navigator wanted me to browse
Reminder: If you have a website you can put my 88x31 banner on it if you like!!
