Update. "#CDC's #STD Lab Shuttered by #Trump Layoffs"
medpagetoday.com/infectiousdis

"A critical laboratory for surveilling sexually transmitted diseases (#STDs) in the US has been lost in the Trump administration's mass layoffs…One of its most remarkable projects is a one-of-its-kind repository of 50,000 isolates of gonorrhea used to monitor antibiotic resistance, which is quickly becoming a global health concern. The lab has been doing this work for nearly 40 years -- but will now, at best, have a gap in data."

"The analysis confirms previous public health findings that #AbstinenceOnly education programs don't succeed in reducing rates of #TeenPregnancies or #STDs. Moreover, public health data indicate that such programs 'have little demonstrated efficacy in helping adolescents to delay intercourse,' the authors write."

Birth control is the practice of taking steps to prevent #pregnancy or #childbirth as a result of sexual activity. Birth control is often used synonymously with #contraception, but birth control technically includes such things as abstinence and the "rhythm method" which do not prevent conception. #Abortion is usually classed as birth control since it prevents a full term pregnancy.

Some forms of birth control, such as the #condom, can help prevent transmission of #STDs.

This article addresses both the social aspects of birth control and the medical aspects, including approximate effectiveness of each method.

#Mississippi hit by 900% increase in #newborns treated for #syphilis
"This seems like something that should have happened a hundred years ago, not last year," the state's former health officer said.

The rise in cases has placed newborns at further risk of life-threatening harm in a state that's already home to the nation's worst infant mortality rate.

NBC NewsMississippi hit by 900% spike in babies treated for congenital syphilisBy Bracey Harris

900% is a bit alarmist but 102 cases of neonatal syphillis is 102 too many for a country with the resources of the USA.

Unsurprisingly this is affect the most marginalised communities. Fortunately we have treatment and understand preventation of #Syphliis transmision. #STDs #Treponema

btw A few years ago I went to #BurningMan where I spoke to people at a #PublicHealth exhibit. They were handing out free condoms -- and information. It turns out California (where a lot of attendees are from) sees a huge spike in sexually transmitted diseases (#STDs) shortly after BurningMan wraps up.
Coincidence? I think not!
