Dear Fediverse,,

A friend of mine wants to get into scientific #Python (specifically for chemical engineering needs). He works in a corporation that doesn't allow Anaconda to be installed in their corporate environment (probably due to licence fees). As he's not an experienced user, a no-frills Python distribution would be good to allow for painfree NumPy, SciPy, Jupyter, Spyder, etc. ... so not vanilla core Python.

Any suggestions? #WinPython maybe?

Hooray for #ScientificPython

If you're reading this and wondering what a Chirp Social group is, it's a bot that automatically boosts any mastodon post that mentions it.

Why use it? Because you can follow the bot, and see posts by other folks interested in your topic. (Hashtags can accomplish this pretty well too. But you might miss hashtags if they're posted on unfamiliar instances.)

Niche interest news: today, after about 3 years of development, we tagged PyCPL 1.0.0 for release.

If writing data reduction pipeline software for European Southern Observatory astronomical instruments is for you, and you'd like to do it in Python, then maybe PyCPL is right up your alley. Look out for the new stable release on the ESO webpages in the next few weeks: eso.org/sci/software/pycpl/

I've decided to mark the occasion with a Bavarian beer, in honour of our colleagues at ESO HQ in Garching bei München.
