Nowadays, you can only cynically sigh relief.

Despite his planned future being destroyed and losing access to his belongings because his is revoked at mid-study, I am happy for him that he got the news while he was abroad instead of being detained at the border and becoming part of
- an unpredictable deportation process
- at an undisclosed location
- without contact with family
- for an unpredictable time, and
- with an unpredictable result.
