#writerscoffeeclub Mar 31. Happy International Transgender Day of Visibility! What trans author has inspired you the most?

Of all the authors I know are trans, probably Aidan Thomas inspires me the most, writing trans latine ya stories. Its nice to see other trans latine authors writing stories that involve trans people and sitting between cultures.

#WritersCoffeeClub 1. April Fool’s Day! Do you include in-jokes, hidden messages, or “easter eggs” in your writing?

I include references, sometimes obscure. They could be considered hidden messages. I also include Japanese language puns, which are lost on my English readers and are probably stupidly simple for Japanese language readers. I know there is a puzzle and hidden message in vol. 1 of my WIP, but even I can’t code it any more.

The references are at the level of mentioning the “Red Room.” David Lynch fans would recognize that. Or a tidbit that harks back to the Alice in Wonderland books or Wizard of Oz movie. For instance, in one scene, gecko shapeshifters start running in circles follow a rat with a long tail. At another point, Ume sings a parody of “We Off to See the Wizard.”

Not a novel writer but the artist Alexander Alexander and his music pre-transition under Heather Alexander inspired me a lot. His music is about fae and navigating a world with a logic all its own. I especially liked how pre-transition he had a song Old Man From the Barrow that was fulfilled by his after transition song From Out the Barrow.

TBH, I don't know if any of the authors that have inspired me are trans or not, either because they are dead by a century or more, or it just hasn't come up. Other than the few I follow on social media, I know little about the actual lives of many current authors. I am inspired by a lot of trans artists, video creators, and voice actors, tho!

#WritersCoffeeClub APR-01 in-jokes, hidden messages, easter egg

#AsIf: In the hospital there's a brief blink-and-you-miss-it crossover with #ArkanCotton from one of my other stories
#SubconsciousMind: The story is based on the novel "Geography Club", which, coincidentally gets chosen to be that year's school play in the story
#FindingMe: The story is full of geeky recurring humor that is understood without explanation between the lead chacters

#WritersCoffeeClub 31: Int'l Trans Day of Visibility - author?

I am not observant, and rarely remember author bios. Meaning I could be reading trans authors and have no clue. I definitely recognize that minority voices should be amplified, and attempt to do so, but I do not delve into personal lives. (And me distancing myself is a therapist issue, honestly.)

I will shout out Charlie Jane (as others have), since I watched them back in the io9.com days. Alas, haven't had the chance to read much.

It's hard to single out one "most."
Leslie Feinberg has to go in there. In SFF I'd start with Charlie Jane Anders, J. S. Fields, and Alex Wells. In graphic novels, Blue Delliquanti.

Arrgh. Now I'm worrying because I know several are nonbinary but don't know if they identify as *trans* nonbinary.

But they're all greats worth sharing so I'm posting past the anxiety.

Sadly, I'm not aware of any Trans Author who written any of the books I've read. (I do know Trans Authors, just I've not read their work.)

However, I could say Emily Young of Linus Tech Tips fame being a writer for the LTT videos, so getting someone to read the script may count for this case.

There's also the late Maddie Blaustein who played Meowth.

I'm embarrassed to say I don't have a trans author come to mind immediately, but I have been inspired by nonbinary author Alex Washoe who has written some lovely sports romances featuring trans characters.

Not strictly authors in the fiction-focused sense of this tag, but big influences on me have been Natalie Wynn and Abigail Thorn -- and took on board a lot of their style when writing and recording lectures (yes, I did thermodynamics with costume changes...), starting at the height of the pandemic, and hopefully continuing now I work in online learning development.

I don't know many trans authors, but I do remind people that being a furry is an inherently trans stance.

That being said, my own works involve people being transformed, typically without warning or consent, into anthropomorphic and non-anthropomorphic intelligent animals. The non-consensual aspect of their transformation is in recognition that we don't choose to be who and what we are, it's part of what makes us who we are to begin with and we're now expressing it openly. It's more of a physical and spiritual rebirth, becoming a part of a more accepting and supportive community, similar to becoming a furry. Sadly, it is complete with the being disowned, and often attacked or killed, by their unsupportive birth families. Found family > Birth Family. The Blood of the Covenant is thicker than the Water of the Womb.

Read in the light of queerness as a coming out and becoming who you truly are, living an authentic life instead of what everyone around you imposes on you, I see it as being a very good representation of transness and of queerness in general.

I don't know that I've ever read a book by a trans author...I don't typically look into that sort of stuff. I rarely even pay enough attention to the author's name to remember it lol Only if I want to read more of their stuff. But gender identity etc. doesn't play a part in that. 🤷‍♀️

disappointed but not surprised by the answers on #WritersCoffeeClub today, so many cis people cannot even name one trans author! some let’s fix that! this is now a thread where everyone lists every trans author you know and direct links to their works ^^

I’m one by the way :neko:

and here are a few of my absolute favorite authors–
