Terrible? Sure. Rather diplomatically, the clip cites population boom, pandemic, and rising inflation as potential causes.

Now, look at "UCP cuts to Alberta Legal Aid will hurt the most vulnerable" from Policy Options, by Parul Kanwar.

> In its latest budget, the United Conservative Party (UCP) government announced it would reduce Legal Aid Alberta’s 2025 funding to $88 million from $110 million while arguing “current service levels will be maintained as a result of increased contributions from the Alberta Law Foundation.”
>
>This suggests a willing partnership that simply doesn’t exist. The foundation strongly opposes it. So, let’s be clear: This is an abdication of the government’s duty to provide critical justice services to Albertans, particularly the most vulnerable.

The Alberta Law Foundation funds a lot of justice system adjacent services that provide support to Albertans - be they victims of crime, vulnerable populations, homeless, addicted, or mentally ill. What Kanwar is outlining here is that the province is not only cutting the budget to these services, but they’re PITTING these services against each other in a devil may cry free for all battle royale.

But, what’s this? I might be just reading about this now? You’ll realize the Foundation has been fighting about this for months. The signal is being suppressed.

Premier Smith and the UCP are basically asking these services to choose amongst themselves as tribute for sacrifice. So, while Smith tries to curry favour with American conservative influencers at the expense of Canadians, while she tries to slow investigations into corruption within her party about how healthcare is provided in Alberta, while she tries to start a new Alberta police force to select officers ostensibly be more sensitive to Alberta interests, I take the view she’s doing absolutely everything in her power to keep churning the news cycle.

Here’s a sentiment for you: Canadians want Danielle Smith to go to jail.

- #AbLeg #AbPoli #CdnPoli

EDIT: This link I was talking about and didn't include https://www.ctvnews.ca/edmonton/video/2025/04/08/record-number-of-people-turned-away-from-womens-shelters-in-2024-data/

https://policyoptions.irpp.org/magazines/ucp-cuts-alberta-legal-aid/

https://www.canadianlawyermag.com/resources/professional-regulation/alberta-law-foundation-launches-campaign-to-oppose-proposed-increase-in-legal-aid-contributions/390806
