In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion.

Science is more than a body of knowledge, it's a way of thinking, a way of skeptically interrogating the universe with a fine understanding of human fallibility. If we are not able to ask skeptical questions, to interrogate those who tell us something is true, to be skeptical of those in authority, then we're up for grabs for the next charlatan — political or religious — who comes ambling along. The people have to be educated, and they have to practice their skepticism and their education otherwise we don't run the government, the government runs us.

@bytebro

The video is obviously modern, and it looks like it is several of Sagan's monologues edited and stitched together with modern video clips.

It's using the right music for #Cosmos at the beginning, but whether that's actually from Cosmos I don't know. Sagan did other stuff.

I hope my time is a long way away yet, but when my time comes I want to have a pretty one like Carl's. Maybe in a park where cats and dogs are free to roam around.

In unserem Weekly-Podcast stellen wir immer ein Buch/Film/Doku/Serie/Podcast als "Tipp der Woche" vor. Diesmal ist es Carl Sagans Werk "The demon-haunted World".
