In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion.

Starting my next book, and I’m a little embarrassed to admit that I have never read this before: I really do not understand how I have allowed this state of affairs to happen #Goodreads #ReadingChallenge #CurrentlyReading #Bibliophile #Bookworm #CarlSagan #TheDemonHauntedWorld #ScienceAsaCandleInTheDark #BookLovers
Science is more than a body of knowledge, it's a way of thinking, a way of skeptically interrogating the universe with a fine understanding of human fallibility. If we are not able to ask skeptical questions, to interrogate those who tell us something is true, to be skeptical of those in authority, then we're up for grabs for the next charlatan — political or religious — who comes ambling along. The people have to be educated, and they have to practice their skepticism and their education otherwise we don't run the government, the government runs us.

I hope my time is a long way away yet, but when my time comes I want to have a pretty one like Carl's. Maybe in a park where cats and dogs are free to roam around.
I’ve noticed this book has been getting a lot of play lately. So I thought I’d revisit it. I was disappointed.
'History is full of people who out of fear, or ignorance, or lust for power have destroyed knowledge of immeasurable value which truly belongs to us all. We must not let that happen again."

In unserem Weekly-Podcast stellen wir immer ein Buch/Film/Doku/Serie/Podcast als "Tipp der Woche" vor. Diesmal ist es Carl Sagans Werk "The demon-haunted World".

We have been geared to take, use, waste.
We must change this habit.

Did you know we're essentially all #STARS? That is to say, we’re actually the children of stars!
How does it feel to have stars for parents?

(You can skip to the last paragraph :)
Our loyalties are to the species and the planet. We speak for Earth.
Our obligation to survive is owed not just to ourselves but also to that Cosmos, ancient and vast, from which we spring.
