"#Decentralisation & #federation are valued for their impact on #powerstructures, but there are multiple ways to structure power in #opensocialnetworks.
A quick summary:
The conceptual model of #ActivityPub resembles that of email: independent servers sending messages to each other.
The conceptual model of #ATProto resembles that of the web: independent sites publish data, and indexers aggregate this data into different views & apps." @laurenshof (2024)

Slow progress towards actual decentralisation, but some people are starting to build connections within ATProto that doesn't touch any Bluesky infrastructure.

I'm still critical of Bluesky leadership promoting the ability to leave Bluesky for somewhere else on ATProto when there's nowhere else to go; but I still hope development continues down this path.

I hear from a lot of people that app overload puts them off using apps for decentralised networks like jabber, the fediverse, matrix, and nostr. What if they could install apps for all these networks, but redirect notifications from them into one? So they could check all their messages in their preferred messaging app, and tapping on a message from another app would open that app at that message.

There really is nothing holy to #DOGE, is there? They are pulling the rug out from EVERYONE who is even remotely working with #MITRE #CVE in #cybersecurity

What are those apes doing? It's like deleting / burning all books about diseases.

#blackwednesday The worst is that there is literally no lead time to prepare something else, fork it, whatever.

Rebooting the #openweb in a good way

The #Fediverse exists, and more than that, it’s alive and kicking. Sure, it might be a messy, chaotic, a bit fragmented, and yes, still niche. But let’s not underplay it, this is the healthiest corners of the internet we’ve got. Tens of million accounts, hundreds of thousands active people, sometimes talking about how we build our digital spaces from the bottom up. Yep, there are the cat videos, the #fluffys and the #spikys. But also an in-group debate is bubbling away about who […]
