@pc_bain @edibuddies @stetwalk Hello! I edit political and classical philosophy texts -- books, papers, and dissertations. I edit in American English, and I have experience working with people for whom English is not a primary language. I am familiar with common style guides. I have an MS in Ethics, so I offer a philosophical sounding-board as well as standard editing and formatting services. That's probably #DevelopmentalEditing?

Now, off to check out these amazing hashtags.

Since I just wrote this handy little summary for another purpose, I thought I'd share it here. It's about revising the dissertation for publication

* The dissertation is proving one's chops as a scholar. It is about the author. It has a topic. It has an audience of 1-3 people, and its job is to get you the PhD.
* The book is different in every way. It's about the reader, and the subject. It has a thesis and an argument. It has an audience scoped by the author (undergraduate students, advanced scholars, etc.)
* The book proposal is another document altogether: Its audience is the marketing department at the Press. The proposal also needs to provide evidence that the book will be done in a timely manner and on time (as defined by the author). That means a full manuscript or 2-3 chapters and an outline/chapter breakdown that evidences that this is not the dissertation, but a saleable scholarly book.

Just found out: the 2nd edition of an industry standard, Developmental Editing: A Handbook for Freelancers, Authors, and Publishers, by Scott Norton, comes out Sept. 2023. Will include #editing exercises & a chapter on #fiction. bit.ly/42mzKEC #DevelopmentalEditing #Bookstodon

University of Chicago PressDevelopmental EditingThe only guide dedicated solely to developmental editing, now revised and updated with new exercises and a chapter on fiction. Developmental editing—transforming a manuscript into a book that edifies, inspires, and sells—is a special skill, and Scott Norton is one of the best at it. With more than three decades of experience in the field, Norton offers his expert advice on how to approach the task of diagnosing and fixing structural problems with book manuscripts in consultation with authors and publishers. He illustrates these principles through a series of detailed case studies featuring before-and-after tables of contents, samples of edited text, and other materials to make an otherwise invisible process tangible.   This revised edition for the first time includes exercises that allow readers to edit sample materials and compare their work with that of an experienced professional as well as a new chapter on the unique challenges of editing fiction. In addition, it features expanded coverage of freelance business arrangements, self-published authors, e-books, content marketing, and more.   Whether you are an aspiring or experienced developmental editor or an author who works alongside one, you will benefit from Norton’s accessible, collaborative, and realistic approach and guidance. This handbook offers the concrete and essential tools it takes to help books to find their voice and their audience.

Supremely late to this. I've finally downloaded and read the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP)'s latest guide ‘Developmental Editing for Non-Fiction’, by the awesome Claire Beveridge.

Available as a free download for CIEP members and for purchase by non-members. It's packed with practical info. Go get yours now!

#Introduction

I’ve been struggling with introducing myself since I arrived here about two weeks ago. I had been spending time on Twitter while I healed from shin tendinitis and then sciatica. It was a good way to pass the time, and I read a lot of interesting thoughts on politics and social issues.

The first thing I noticed about #Mastodon is that there are people here! And I thought, this is where I’ve been looking for. And then I thought, Oh no! There are people here!

For a living, I do #DevelopmentalEditing and #Ghostwriting. I also #Write.

I am a proud (but anxious these days) #Jew and #Zionist. I am a #woman and #feminist. I am a #LGBTQ+ ally and a #PoC ally. Above all, I am a #HumanBeing. I chose my server because I like its name #IsNotAlive, and I want to know what “thinking about beans” means.
