Since I just wrote this handy little summary for another purpose, I thought I'd share it here. It's about revising the dissertation for publication
* The dissertation is proving one's chops as a scholar. It is about the author. It has a topic. It has an audience of 1-3 people, and its job is to get you the PhD.
* The book is different in every way. It's about the reader, and the subject. It has a thesis and an argument. It has an audience scoped by the author (undergraduate students, advanced scholars, etc.)
* The book proposal is another document altogether: Its audience is the marketing department at the Press. The proposal also needs to provide evidence that the book will be done in a timely manner and on time (as defined by the author). That means a full manuscript or 2-3 chapters and an outline/chapter breakdown that evidences that this is not the dissertation, but a saleable scholarly book.
