Brisbane city council has pulled funding for a music awards after winner used her acceptance speech to denounce #genocide, while the conservative LNP Queensland state government also considers withdrawal of financial support.

web.archive.org/web/2025033109

Jazz composer and pianist #KelleeGreen used her acceptance speech at the #2025QueenslandMusicAwards to speak of the suffering of #Palestinian civilians and to support peaceful protest against Australian government complicity in selling weapons to Israel (in contravention of obligations under international law, including a specific injunction by the #InternationalCourtOfJustice).

The claim by the council is that her speech was 'divisive'.

Treating opposition to genocide as #divisive is (implicitly or explicitly) to normalise being pro-genocide as a legitimate political stance.

Normalising support for genocide is itself a crime under #InternationalLaw.

By only ever punishing anti-genocide speech, and never those who express unqualified support for a genocidal regime (or who even seek to justify its extreme violence through appeal to a 'right to defend itself'), political authorities send the clear message that we ought to be tolerant of those who support exterminative violence and intolerant of those who oppose it.

Never.

Another fired employee said the hundreds of dismissals meant that the #aid agency now had only a skeleton crew to respond to #humanitarian crises.

The appointee running day-to-day operations at #USAID is #PeteMarocco, a #State Dept official overseeing foreign aid who was a #divisive figure at the agency & other government departments in the first #Trump administration. Early this month, #MarcoRubio announced he was taking over the aid agency as acting administrator.

On those who warn against 'divisiveness'

In a time of acrimony and unrest, politicians urge social cohesion and decry those who stoke division. They label protesters troublemakers and haters. They bring in new regulations making it more difficult for ordinary people to publicly criticise the injustices of the status quo and to organise against them in a coherent and effective manner (i.e. #CriminalisationOfDissent).

But real social cohesion can only be built on mutual respect across differences in combination with a sense of shared responsibility for common goods. Respect requires trust. Trust requires honesty and a sustained commitment to working towards shared goals. And so when those who demonise protesters for 'divisiveness' have themselves demonstrated a sustained commitment to dishonesty in service of merely private goods, or goods for a limited group at the expense of those outside it, then it is the accusers who are guilty of their own complaint.

To be established and maintained, social divisions and exclusion always require both the propagation of falsehood and the use of violence to suppress the truth. Thus, to speak frankly about actually existing injustices is not to be divisive, but to hold open the only path towards any kind of genuine social peace.

Texas Senator Ted Cruz’s massive grift was embarrassingly revealed during his debate against Representative #Colin #Allred Tuesday night.

Cruz has been seriously struggling in his Senate race against Allred, and on Tuesday, it seemed that Allred dealt several critical blows to the Texas Republican.

In his closing remarks, Allred didn’t hold back.
“We’re all Americans, and we’re all Texans. We need a leader who will bring us together around our shared values. That’s what I’m trying to do during my six years in Congress.
💥That’s the exact opposite of what Senator Cruz has done,” Allred said.

“Whatever he says tonight, you’ve seen it for 12 years. He’s been one of the most #divisive senators in the entire country. If you don’t like how things are going in Washington right now, well, you know what, 💥he is singularly responsible for it.

“He has introduced this new kind of ‘#angertaiment’ where you just get people upset and then you podcast about it, and you write a book about it, and you make some money on it,
but you’re not actually there when people need you.
Like when the lights went out, when 30 million Texans were relying on a senator to spring into action,
he went to Cancun.
That’s who he is,” Allred said.

@flexghost The #fascist message is loud and proud from these #assholes. My greatest #fear is that too many people are unable to recognize it.

At this stage, anyone who still supports #trump has willfully abandoned both their conscience and any/all capacities for #empathy and #compassion. They have chosen to accept and live a #delusional and #divisive #reality where, quite bluntly, anyone who doesn't share their beliefs is the #enemy.

The number of #people, #corporations, #religious groups, and #organizations willing to throw massive amounts of #money and #support behind Trump and this #maga movement is simply staggering. We, as #americans and #humans, are living in critically #dangerous time. #History is repeating itself in real time yet too many people are incapable of recognizing it and/or don't care.

This one is particularly personal for me, as I'm moving in July, probably to a state other than MA. Considering moving to a purplish state, where my Dem vote will have more impact. Looks like SC won't work out for me 😆

@GottaLaff - liking the Canada idea, but had a traumatic move only 3 years ago, and not quite ready for that just yet...
