Years ago, about mid-March, a brother in law and I headed out to fish old gravel pits. 1st time fishing that year. Ice had just gone out.

I had a huge hit. A few cranks of the reel and a huge bass was at my feet. My brother in law got out a $1 bill (6"), mesuring the fish at 4 bills - 24".

I could easily fit my hand and wrist in her mouth. I was stunned.

I didn't bring a camera figured I wouldn't catch anything so early in the season.

Every good fishing camp has a good camp dog. I think it's a law.

Their jobs include greeting boats when tieing up, checking out the catch, bear alarm, jumping in the water for no reason, going cabin to cabin to look in the windows to see if anyone is there, begging for something to eat if someone is inside, and pushing in the door and sleeping in the cabin if they feel like it.

For about 9 years, I belong to a bass fishing club, not for the competition, but so I could fish from a boat on lots of lakes and rivers. I didn't quite fit in as most of the members hung around bars and strip clubs after fishing - not my scene. I'd go back.to the hotel.

After some time I began to wonder if I belonged to a bass fishing club with a drinking problem or a drinking club with a bass fishing problem.

I'm more comfortable with a place that calls itself a camp because it probably embodies the practical blue-collar attitude that's handy for a fisherman to have. You're there to fish, and in the odd hours when you're not fishing, you'll  need food and a dry place sleep and you won't nit-pick about the ambiance either and if you have had any experience with fish camps,
you'll be pleasantly surprised to find there is a door on the cabin.

[My guide] said the fishing was slow, but then guides endure so many clients who expect non-stop thrills that sometimes they lose sight of reality. In fact, this was perfectly good fishing for someone who still believes - in spite of a lifetime's of evidence to the contrary - that catching fish is pretty much unlikely.

Smallies have an air about them of being all business.  They're compact, chunky, and muscular; greenish- bronze-colored with broken brownish olive vertical bars….

If a brook trout comes off as a delicate creature on its way to a party, a smallmouth bass is a guy in coveralls clocking in at work.
