We now take it for granted but adding a display to a copying machine was a novel idea in the early 80s. In this 1984 video Austin Henderson told the history of and demoed Trillium, an Interlisp environment for designing and prototyping user interfaces for Xerox copier control panels.

Trillium was actually more versatile as Henderson used the system to run the slideshow in this presentation. See also:

Okay, after playing around some more with #GnomeOS I am liking what it is: a #Gnome centric #Flatpak driven atomic/immutable operating system.

After some tinkering and hunting around, I was able to find alternatives to the many apps/packages that I would install via the #CLI. Honestly it is kind of nice being able to do almost everything in a well crafted #GUI.

I am going to play with it some more. Maybe this will be the OS that changes my minds towards immutable/atomic distros?

Tuba: a desktop #fediverse client for #GNU #Linux Here's a nice review. news.itsfoss.com/tuba/ If you install #Debian (ver. 13), with #GNOMEDesktop it is already installed. Can be installed, with #APT commands, from the terminal. I like it, so far, but am looking for #GUI customizations. Glad to learn there's an #accessibility preferences panel.

One thing I miss about the #KDE 1 / #GNOME 1 / #MacOS 9/X days is that there were a zillion different #GUI themes, each with cool and unique looks for widgets. Gradients, drop shadows, brushed metal textures, buttons that look like glass vials full of blue liquid, you name it. GUIs actually looked cool.

Now custom themes, where they exist at all, are nothing but flat, solid, desaturated colors and rounded rectangles. It's dreadfully boring.

:xorg: Is the fact that X simply does what we want while the alternative isn't truly ready not a good enough reason? Why can't someone choose to keep using it?

I fully support the points made by @lxo@snac.lx.oliva.nom.br I'm also another busy person who tries Wayland periodically when people claim it's finally ready – and unfortunately, I consistently find it's not there yet, at least for me. If it works well enough for others, that's great! Let's keep choices available.

It's cool seeing /r/unixporn all adopt hyprland. Great project to support, the clear successor to i3 in the wayland world, and many improvements.

Kinda stale seeing the same thing everyday though. I miss the early days of linux WM when we had a bunch of different paradigms. fvwm the multitool, lots of looks. enlightenment the bleeding edge 360noscopepushittothelimit customize everything, windowmaker and nextstep doing the NeXT vibes.
