Old PC which had Win10, core I3 CPU and only 4GB RAM was (unsurprisingly) slow and laggy, as an experiment I installed #LinuxMint on it with lightweight #XFCE desktop.

It is a fair bit more usable now (still slightly laggy probably due to me transferring my entire camera roll from Dropbox which is currently hammering all the resources) - definitely has potential as a backup PC in the office for light admin tasks, it could handle MS365 web apps (which alas, get used a lot here as well as Sharepoint) - (even the network printer worked "out of the box" via CUPS!)

[This toot is direct from the PC via #firefox

Won three Red Cross First Aid and Home Nursing books from a local auction - while I was at it I placed a last minute bid on a Dell Latitude XT2 convertible laptop - No one knew anything about it - It has limited memory (4gb I think), 150gb hard drive (old spinning type....) and a dual core Centrino - it's nothing special - but I got it for $1.00 and Linux Mint 22.1 does seem to run just fine on it - put Xournal + on it, and can use it to take hand written notes.

@bulqa #LinuxMint is based on the current #Ubuntu Long Term Support Release. (Apps usually do *not* receive feature updates after release.) It's not at all unstable. Just the opposite.

#Fedora has a different purpose. New versions are released every 6 months. There's a good chance that Fedora's apps are the most current available, while Mint's may be a release or two behind. You'll see hundreds of updates in Fedora and you'll need to update close to daily.

You get security updates in both.

Can't Log in to User on Linux Mint Cinnamon (Loops Back to Login Window)

lemmy.worldCan't Log in to User on Linux Mint Cinnamon (Loops Back to Login Window) - Lemmy.WorldHi fediverse, I’m hoping someone can give me some advice on an issue that means I can’t access the main user account on my Linux Mint (Cinnamon) operating system. Context: I’m using a dual boot setup of windows and mint on my laptop. I use mint (or used to, when I could access my user) for pretty much anything that doesn’t require things* only my windows instance has. (*things such as support for video games that support windows but not linux, for example) When creating my main user account, I made a mistake in the username. It was irritating enough for me to want to change it, and as doing so seemed like it should have been fine, I settled upon three guides and ended up (mostly?) just following this one: https://www.linuxuprising.com/2019/04/how-to-change-username-on-ubuntu-debian.html [https://www.linuxuprising.com/2019/04/how-to-change-username-on-ubuntu-debian.html] [https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/f471c67c-c014-42c3-adae-877a4f90eeb4.png] [https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/ba7a751d-6116-4333-bac6-7e1b124f42cc.png] I cant remember all of what happened anymore, but I have the following screenshots, along with the stuff I do remember. (note: red blocks represent the new username, blue blocks represent the old username) [https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/138eb971-f5b3-4e2a-8ae1-7a943f0e1aa4.png] [https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/63465d9a-b2eb-46e7-aafb-fa383113b603.png] [https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/5d3b2676-f5b3-4fcc-90d0-83df60bab0a4.png] [https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/7e2c776a-ef95-4a93-921e-9262118d6b90.png] At the used-by-process error, I first tried following the guide precisely, then hoped that “PID” was Process ID, and that the guide expected me to put the ID that usermod stated after “PID”, and tried doing that. Idk if that fvcked something up… Then I guess I fixed that somehow, idk if I did so by restarting and logging in only as tempuser, or if I had already done that and fixed it some other way. Anyway I meant to run each line of the command separately to avoid stuff going wrong, but accidentally did both at once. I hoped it’d be fine anyway. Then stuff happened I guess. Anyway, I cant remember much more but I know that I tried to log back in as my main user account and I found out that: 1. The username had been successfully changed. 2. I could not log into my main user account. Imputing the correct username and password was successful, and acted like it was logging me in as usual. Then after the usual black screen, it just throws me back to the login window. This still happens. I went through a fair bit of internet searching, followed some advice. All that most people were saying was to check how much disk space you have left - and to not keep timeshift snapshots on the same drive as your OS. (this is one such post, and (I think) the only one I found that I definitely recognise from the previous searching: https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxmint/comments/15revgg/cant_stay_logged_in_keeps_going_back_to_login/ [https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxmint/comments/15revgg/cant_stay_logged_in_keeps_going_back_to_login/]) I did ctrl-alt-f1 and ran df -h, and deleted most of the timeshift snapshots I had (I think I had maybe 6 and deleted 4 or 5). Here’s the output of df -h that I think is from after I deleted the timeshifts: [https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/473384cb-897a-476c-b360-cb1c5abdeb53.jpeg] Idk what to do, hope someone can advise. (TL;DR: tried to change username on mint, now whenever I try to log in to the user it throws me back to the login window after the usual black screen. Hope this suffices for a summary…)
