Amsterdam_XXXThe Oudemanhuispoort courtyard is a hidden gem in the city center. Tucked between Kloveniersburgwal and Oudezijds Achterburgwal, it’s part of a 17th-century complex originally built as a shelter for the elderly. Now owned by the University of Amsterdam, it hosts the Faculty of Humanities and student housing. 👩‍🎓🧑‍🎓🏛️📚 The courtyard is accessed through a covered passage known for its secondhand book market. Amsterdam_XXXIn the middle of the city’s ‘Red Light District’ stands the “Oude Kerk”, the city’s oldest building, founded in 1️⃣3️⃣0️⃣6️⃣. Its vast wooden ceiling, gives the Gothic interior a unique atmosphere. 🧖‍♀️🕯️ The church shifted from Catholic to Protestant after the 1️⃣5️⃣7️⃣8️⃣ Reformation. Many locals were buried here, including some prominent figures, like Saskia van Uylenburgh, Rembrandt’s wife. 🪦☠️ 🎨 Now a cultural venue, it hosts exhibitions, concerts & art. Amsterdam_XXXThe building across the street that this little girl is looking at was built in 1️⃣8️⃣7️⃣8️⃣. The apartment block is located in the “Zaagpoortbuurt” (literally: ‘sawgate area’). 🪚🚪 Marnixstraat is a main road between two famous squares (Leidseplein and Haarlemmerplein). The street has a mix of old and modern buildings, including some from the 19th century. Amsterdam_XXXThe houseboat “Rumah Saya” is a motor tjalk located at the intersection of Keizersgracht and Amstel. This historic vessel, built in 1893, measures approximately 16.7 meters in length and 3.7 meters in width. ⛵️ In Indonesian, rumah saya literally means “my house” (rumah = house, saya = I/my). Amsterdam_XXXVijzelgracht 39 in Amsterdam is a historic building with a rich history. Built in the 17th century, and given a simple neck gable with plain, undecorated volutes in the 18th century. 🏠 On the first floor, where the Smiley flag is fluttering fierce, a 17th-century window arrangement is still intact. 🙂 The most famous yellow smiley face was designed in 1963 by Harvey Ball, an American graphic artist. The design featured a simple yellow circle with black dots for eyes and a curved smile. Amsterdam_XXXThe white building on the left is the facade of the third oldest bar in town. It first opened in 1️⃣6️⃣2️⃣6️⃣ and it’s still there. For over 15 years, a sign behind the windows read: “Not for sale or rent.”💰🤷🏻‍♂️ And yet, dozens, maybe even hundreds of people dropped a note in the mailbox, hoping to take over the legendary Amsterdam café Brandon.
