#IOI / Israel excluded from future events due to humanitarian crisis it caused in Gaza

Starting from 2025, #Israel will no longer be recognized as a participating delegation at IOI events, but individual contestants from Israel can still participate under the IOI flag.

The latest #Olympiad was hosted by #Egypt from September 1st to 8th. The competition is one of five international science olympiads held annually.

Le Quang Liem defeated Ding Li Ren allowing Vietnam to force a draw with China in round 6 of #Chess #Olympiad. #Vietnam currently shares the #2 spot after 6 rounds. The US men's team is currently out of top 10 which is an upset, whereas its women's team still ranks top 4.

A fun fact is that the commentators failed to realize that Le Quang Liem's surname is Le. They kept calling him Le Quang as if Le Quang was his given name. Maybe they thought he was French.

Every year, 6 exceptionally talented high school students from each country take part in the International Mathematical Olympiad 🧠. Tolga Yuret from Istanbul Technical University has researched the career paths of 2785 medallists.

It turned out that despite the similar level of mathematical talent, the further career of medallists depends on their country of residence.

SpringerLinkCareer paths of the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) medalists - ScientometricsEach year, six exceptionally talented high school students from each country participate in the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO). We thoroughly searched the internet to find the career paths of 2785 IMO medalists who participated in the competition from 1986 to 2005. We have found that the career paths of IMO medalists depend on their home country, despite their similar levels of mathematical talent. For example, the extent to which medalists studied abroad varies significantly among countries in the same geographical region and with comparable income levels. We also found that there is a high concentration in medalists’ foreign education. For example, MIT educated more foreign medalists than any country except for the United States both at the undergraduate and Ph.D. levels. Roughly half of the medalists ended up working abroad. Education is found to be an important channel for the migrant medalists. Although majority of the medalists were educated in mathematics, more than three quarters of their non-academic jobs are either software or economics-finance related jobs. Most medalists who became academics are specialized in mathematics. While the rate of becoming a mathematician academic is not dependent on the income level of the medalists' home country, those from higher-income countries tend to have higher academic performance.

@tao @11011110 @enzuber Do you agree that the participant's proof here is correct? codeberg.org/boud/MathsOlympia

The Polish Maths Olympiad committee gave this proof a grade of 0. The possible grades range from 0 (completely wrong) to 6 (completely correct). To me the solution is correct and elegant and the grade should be revised to 6.

An appeal to the committee will be lodged, but having independent opinions might help.
